06/22/19 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Rising sophomore Eric Edwards Jr. tied the USATF U20 Championships meet record in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday. In a photo finish with Tai Brown of Kentucky, Edwards was the meet runner-up by .005 seconds with both runners credited with a 13.21 performance.
With Saturday's outing, Edwards secured a spot on the Team USA roster for the 2019 U20 Pan American Championships (July 18-21) in Costa Rica. He was the U20 Pan American champion in 2017.
Not only did the 13.21 tie the meet record but it also tied the No. 3 junior time in American history. Edwards entered the meet with a junior-height (39 centimeters) best of 13.32 from 2017, a mark that was No. 10 on the all-time US junior list.
Edwards began his day by winning his preliminary heat to secure automatic placement into the event final. He stopped the clock in 13.53 and was the third-overall qualifier.
During his standout freshman season with the Ducks, Edwards was the Pac-12 champion in the 110-meter hurdles and two-time NCAA qualifier. In the semifinal round of the NCAA Championships, he registered a personal-best time of 13.49 and moved to No. 4 in program history.
At the Jamaican National Championships, Oraine Palmer advanced to the semifinal round of the 200 meters Saturday. He won his preliminary heat in 21.08 to move on to the next round. Palmer posted a time of 20.95 in the semifinal and finished 11th overall. The Ducks' 4x100 anchor posted a personal best of 20.56 earlier this month at the NCAA Championships.
