Ducks Finish Fifth at NCAA Championships
06/08/19 | Track and Field
AUSTIN, Texas – The Women of Oregon wrapped the 2019 outdoor campaign with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. The Ducks scored 34 points over their two days of competition, falling four shy of a top-four podium finish. The top-five finish is the 16th in program history and their 10th in the past 11 years.
"They showed what it's like to be Oregon to fight and scrap for every point," head coach Robert Johnson said. "We had a good start with the 4x1 running a season best and Jess Hull running a huge lifetime best but just getting nipped there at the line. That was probably a little unexpected but she's a true warrior and I couldn't be more proud of her and the other women…overall good stuff all around."
NCAA Championships: The Scorers
Jessica Hull – 1,500m (2nd place)
Carmela Cardama Baez – 10,000m (2nd place) [from Thursday]
Susan Ejore – 800m (4th place)
Chaquinn Cook – Triple Jump (4th place)
Kerissa D'Arpino/Venessa D'Arpino/Briyahna DesRosiers/Brianna Duncan – 4x100m (4th place)
Rhesa Foster – Long Jump (7th place) [from Thursday]
Hannah Waller – 400m (8th place)
The Women of Oregon produced five personal- or season-best performances in the seven events they scored, and turned in four top-10 program marks.
The Ducks' 4x100-meter relay team got things started with a season-best 42.99, good for fourth in the race and five points toward the team total. The team of Kerissa D'Arpino, Venessa D'Arpino, Briyahna DesRosiers and Brianna Duncan becomes the seventh-fastest quartet in UO history. The team entered the day with a season best of 43.35 from Thursday's semifinal
Hull, the defending national champion, knocked more than two seconds off her winning time from a year ago and came away as the NCAA runner-up at 1,500 meters. She crossed the finish line in 4:06.27 to post the fastest in-season performance in program history. The school record of 4:05.88 by Leann Warren was set during July of 1982. Hull's time put her at No. 3 on the all-time collegiate list.
Oregon collected a pair of fourth-place finishes from seniors Susan Ejore at 800 meters and Chaquinn Cook in the triple jump, worth a combined 10 points toward the team total.
Ejore was making her NCAA outdoor debut and responded with a personal best of 2:02.26, becoming the tenth-fastest performer in Oregon history. Within minutes of the 800 going final, the Ducks added their final points of the meet with the results from the triple jump. Cook closed out her UO career with a final mark of 13.72m/45-0.25 which doubled as a season's best.
The Ducks also got a point from junior Hannah Waller (52.47) in the 400 meters. The women entered Saturday with 10 points already on board from Carmela Cardama Baez at 10,000 meters (second) and Rhesa Foster in the long jump (seventh).
