Ducks Battle in 5-2 Loss to No. 17 Michigan
01/19/20 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Riki Oshima and freshman Jesper Klöv-Nilsson rallied for a pair of three-set wins Sunday afternoon but the Oregon men's tennis team dropped its first match of the year, a 5-2 setback to No. 17 Michigan. With their latest result, the Ducks are 3-1 through the first two weekends of the dual season.
"I thought we played well all weekend," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Today came down to just a few crucial points. If Ty (Gentry) gets into a third, there's going to be more pressure at No. 1 singles for them. It could have gone either way. Both teams battled hard and that what we want to do early in the season."
The Ducks began the weekend with a 4-0 win over UC Santa Barbara. Both Michigan and UCSB advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
How It Happened: Michigan (2-1) took the early match lead with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots during an intense doubles point. The matchup at the top of the doubles lineup was a battle between top-10 teams in the Ducks' Ty Gentry and Joshua Charlton and Michigan's Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar. The fifth-ranked UM duo clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
Oshima and Klöv-Nilsson each lost the opening set of their respective matches but fought back to give the Ducks their two points in the final tally. Both remain undefeated in dual play this season.
The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 match lead with straight-set wins at the No. 2 and 5 singles positions but the Ducks were still very much intact in the remaining four matches on court. With Oshima and Klöv-Nilsson forcing a third set at No. 4 and 6, respectively, Charlton and Gentry were in to a pair of second-set tiebreaks.
However, the Wolverines wrapped up the match when Siimar pulled through with the win over Gentry at the No. 3 position. Michigan's final point came from Fenty at No. 1, a three-set slugfest with Charlton.
