BOULDER, Colo. – No. 4 Oregon closed to within four points of Colorado twice in the second half but could not overtake the Buffaloes in dropping its Pac-12 opener 74-65 Thursday night at the CU Events center.
Payton Pritchard led Oregon with 21 points, while Chris Duarte added 10.
How it Happened: Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, Duarte sank a three-pointer from the corner with 8:38 to go as the Ducks (11-3, 0-1 Pac-12) closed within four points, 51-47. Colorado (12-2, 1-0) answered with a 6-2 run to extend its lead back to eight, 57-49, with 5:45 remaining.
The Ducks made one last run by scoring four straight points, two each from Shakur Juiston and Anthony Mathis, to make it 57-53 with 4:34 to play. The Buffaloes answered with a 10-2 run over the next 3:09 to put the game out of reach.
In the first half, Oregon led 14-13 with 9:44 to go following a pair of Pritchard free throws. The Ducks then went cold as the Buffaloes surged in front on an 11-2 run to build an eight-point lead, 24-16, with 4:24 left to play. The teams traded buckets the next few minutes before a put back lay-in by N'Faly Dante made it 28-22 Colorado at the break.
Who Stood Out: Chandler Lawson had a career-high five assists.
Notable: Pritchard jumped up two spots to 11th on the UO career scoring list. Thursday he passed fellow Oregonian E.J. Singler (1,546/2009-13) and Blair Rasmussen (1,554/1981-85). Pritchard ended the game with 1,564 points.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
"They hit some big shots there especially late. Made some big plays. Our ball movement the first half was poor. We've gotta hit some shots to start our press."
Up Next: Oregon heads to Salt Lake City to face Utah Saturday at 2 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
