SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon track and field team collected four wins, seven top-10 UO marks and 19 personal bests on a busy Friday split between the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and the Husky Classic in Seattle. Among the highlights, the Ducks posted several marks that rank among the top 20 nationally as the indoor campaign gears up for the NCAA Championships.
In Albuquerque…
Redshirt junior Isaiah Griffith won the triple jump with an indoor personal best of 16.19m/53-1.5 in the fourth round of the competition. He finished nearly a full foot ahead of the runner-up (52-2) and moved to No. 2 on the UO top-10 list. Griffith now trails just school-record holder Nate Moore (53-6.25/2016) in program history.
Based on marks entering the weekend, Griffith ranks No. 5 in the NCAA this season. He also owns a top-15 national mark in the long jump (7.79m/25-6.75) from the Razorback Invitational.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Emily Sloan lowered her personal best—for a second time in a span of two hours—to 8.18 in the final to take the victory. She posted a then-PR of 8.20 as the top qualifier in the prelim. With the result, Sloan becomes the No. 3 performer in school history, and with the adjustment for altitude (8.20), improves her spot within the national top 20.
Senior Brianna Duncan continued her strong indoor campaign with a win in the 60 meters. She stopped the clock in 7.26 to post her second victory of the season. Duncan entered the indoor season with a PR of 7.29 and has now run faster in five of six races this year including a best of 7.21 from the Razorback Invitational.
The final win at the Don Kirby meet came from the men's 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Rieker Daniel, DJ Henderson, Jacob Miller and Jonathan Harvey combined for a season-best time of 3:09.52, just .07 off the program's top-10 list.
In the women's triple jump, sophomore Lexi Ellis and freshman Dominique Ruotolo finished third and fifth, respectively. With her outing, Ruotolo (13.10m/42-11.75) becomes the No. 3 performer in Oregon history. Ellis had a day's best of 13.25m/43-5.75 in the second round. Three of her four legal marks were over the 43-foot measure.
In Seattle…
Redshirt senior Carmela Cardama Baez created more updates to the UO distance top 10 with a personal best of 9:01.67 over 3,000 meters. She finished in eighth place overall, and with the effort, moves to No. 5 on the program's top-10 list. Cardama Baez entered Friday's race with a previous best of 9:09.51 from last year's MPSF Championships.
Earlier this season, Cardama Baez broke the UO record at 5,000 meters with her 15:25.41 performance at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 7).
In the men's 3,000 meters, junior Cooper Teare and redshirt senior James West recorded the No. 1 and 3 times in the NCAA. Teare posted a time of 7:46.45 and was followed closely by West in 7:47.10, also good to stand as the fifth- and sixth-fastest performers in the storied history of Oregon distance running. Teare and West were both part of the Ducks' NCAA-record DMR from the Razorback Invitational earlier in the season.
Freshman Cole Hocker won the penultimate section of the 3,000 meters with a personal-best time of 7:57.26, sprinting past the lead pack over the final meters. He finished 13th overall and was eighth among collegians in the field.
The final race of the night featured senior Jackson Mestler knocking 10 seconds off his previous best at 5,000 meters to come away with a time of 13:36.62 and a runner-up finish. The effort moves Mestler to No. 5 on the national performance list this season and the UO top-10 list. He entered the season with a PR of 13:46.90 from last year's Husky Classic.
