Complete Performances Lead to Doubleheader Sweep
02/07/20 | Softball
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Oregon swept its doubleheader against BYU and George Washington behind dominant pitching in a 3-1 game one win and an offensive outburst in an 18-0 win over George Washington in game two Friday.
Brooke Yanez tossed a gem in game one, striking out 17 batters which was good for the second-most in program history while walking none. In game two, the Ducks' offense took over led by big games from Terra McGowan, Haley Cruse and Ariel Carlson and a 10-run second inning. In the circle, Samaria Diaz and Makenna Kliethermes worked a shutout while combining for 11 strikeouts.
How it Happened – Game 1 (Oregon 3, BYU 1): Yanez took complete control from the get-go, striking out back-to-back batters to begin the game and six of the first seven she faced. After giving up a double and triple over a stretch of three batters, she fanned nine in a row while recording her next 10 outs via strikeout. The junior finished off a 1-2-3 seventh inning with her 17th strikeout to retire 13 of the last 14 she faced.
The Ducks again jumped in front in the first inning, plating a run on two hits. Cruse worked a walk to start the game for the second straight day, and Allee Bunker singled to put runners at first and second and no outs. After a groundout moved them to second and third, Rachel Cid drove in Cruse with an RBI infield single.
BYU tied things up at one apiece in the third, but Oregon regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Mya Felder opened the inning with a leadoff walk, and two batters later Cruse plated pinch-runner Jazzy Contreras to put the Ducks ahead for good. McGowan added a key insurance run with a two-out single, driving in Cruse to make it 3-1.
Notable: Yanez's 17 strikeouts are also the most by an Oregon player since Hawkins fanned a school-record 18 on Feb. 14, 2014 … It's also the 18th time that Yanez has reached double-digits in strikeouts in her career, including her two years at UC Davis … Her 17 strikeouts are one shy of her career high, which she set in her penultimate start of her sophomore season when she fanned 18.
Game 2 (Oregon 18, George Washington 0 (5)): The Ducks again jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the first. Cid drove in a run with an RBI infield hit before Carlson delivered her first career RBI with a line-shot double to left, making it 2-0.
Oregon then scored 10 runs in the top of the second, sending 14 batters to the plate to break it open. Cruse drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI single, plating Shaye Bowden before McGowan made it 4-0 with a run-scoring double. Carlson smoked a two-run double down the left-field line that scored runs three and four in the frame, then Jasmine Sievers picked up her first RBI with a single to make it 7-0. Bowden and Hannah Galey then drove in runs, stretching it to 9-0 before Cruse capped the inning off with a two-run single.
After Maddie Hopper delivered her first career RBI with a base hit in the third, the Ducks added five more in the fourth to stretch it to 18-0. McGowan and Cid launched back-to-back bombs, with McGowan crushing a grand slam out to left and Cid hit a towering solo shot to left center to close the scoring.
In the circle, Diaz dominated over 3.1 shutout innings with six strikeouts while giving up just one hit. She gave way to Kliethermes, who struck out all five batters she faced over 1.2 innings to finish off the win.
Notable: The 10-run second inning is the most the Ducks have scored in a frame since playing 13 in an inning against Bryant on March 11, 2018 … Oregon's 18 runs are the most it has scored in a game since May 3, 2016 against Utah Valley, when it scored 19.
Doubleheader Box Score Notes: McGowan finished the doubleheader 5-for-9 with six RBIs, a double and a home run … Cruse went 4-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored over the two games, highlighted by a 3-for-4 outing in game two … Cid finished 4-for-7 with four runs scored and three RBIs after going 3-for-3 against George Washington in game two … Oregon pitching combined for 28 strikeouts and no walks in the two games … The Ducks recorded 28 of the 36 total outs on Friday via strikeout.
On Deck: The Ducks will take on Nevada Saturday at 10:30 a.m. PT.
