Ducks Fail To Rally Against UC Davis
03/01/20 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. – Junior goalkeeper Alle Dunbar registered a season-high 11 saves, but Oregon couldn't rally back from a five-goal deficit in the first half, falling to UC Davis, 14-8, on Sunday at Pape Field.
The Ducks owned a commanding 16-8 edge in draw controls, but couldn't turn those draw wins into goals en route to slipping to 1-4 on the season. Taking on its fourth consecutive Pac-12 opponent to open the season, UC Davis evened its record at 2-2 with the win.
Dunbar turned in her best performance of the young season, keeping the Ducks within striking distance with eight stops in the second half. Down 6-1 early, the Ducks climbed to within two, 8-6, at the half, but couldn't close the gap in the second half. The Aggies limited Oregon to a season-low two goals in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Davis opened the scoring just 1:09 into the game, but the Ducks responded less than 30 seconds later. Junior Claire Domshick got the Ducks on the board to even the score at 1-1.
The Aggies found momentum and owned a 12-minute stretch of game time that resulted in a 5-0 run and 6-1 lead with 13:48 left in the opening half.
Oregon found a bit of a rhythm on offense to stop the UC Davis run and answered with three consecutive goals and five of the next seven to cut the deficit to 8-6 going into the half. Four different players tallied unassisted goals during the strong finish with leading scorer Shonly Wallace accounting for two of the scores.
Unfortunately, the two-goal halftime deficit was as close as Oregon would come thanks to a 5-1 run by UC Davis over the first 22 minutes of the final frame. The Aggies out-shot the Ducks 22-14 in the second half, but Dunbar kept the home team in it with the aforementioned eight saves.
QUOTABLE: Head Coach Chelsea Gamble Hoffman
"I think we're going to be young for a while, so I think for us it's about figuring out who we are and how our upperclassmen that are in the game can really help us. Lily Shalz, Logan Gierke, and Jamie Level as sophomores got a lot of good experience last year and they are playing like juniors now just because they've had those grinding moments, and I think they can help those underclassmen not feel so young. I think our maturity will come in the next couple of years, but we still want to figure out how we can keep grinding and get some of those wins."
