01/28/22 | Track and Field
Alysah Hickey broke the school record in the long jump set by Jenna Prandini at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On a day highlighted by a school record for Alysah Hickey in the long jump, the Oregon track and field team combined for six top-10 program performances Friday at the Razorback Invitational.
Â
Into the Record Books
Alysah Hickey – No. 1, women's long jump (6.66m/21-10.25)
Mason Strunk – No. 2, men's weight throw (20.84m/68-4.5)
Tori Sloan – No. 7, women's high jump (1.75m/5-8.75)
Iman Brown – No. 8, women's 200 meters (23.25)
Pierce LaCoste – No. 10, men's long jump (7.64m/25-0.75)
Jaida Ross – No. 10, women's weight throw (17.72m/58-1.75)
Â
After threatening the mark in her first attempt, Hickey became the Oregon school-record holder in the women's long jump with a final measure of 6.66m/21-10.25 in the sixth round. Hickey just eclipsed the previous record of 6.65m/21-10 set by a victorious Jenna Prandini at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Â
"It's extremely motivating to know that this is my opener and I still have a lot of things to fix," Hickey said. "There are things I can tell on my own, and then I can go back to talk to (Coach) Johnson. It makes me happy that there are still things to fix because I know I can get progressively better. There's a lot to do and there's a lot of time so I'm very excited about what's to come."
Â
Along with breaking the school record, Hickey is now tied for the NCAA lead in the event and the No. 3 jump in the world this year. The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year threatened the UO mark right off the bat with a jump of 6.60m/21-8 in the first round. Coming into the weekend, Hickey owned an indoor best of 6.20m/20-4.25 from the 2020 season.
Â
For a second-consecutive meet, Mason Strunk recorded a lifetime best in the weight throw, and with his mark of 20.84m/68-4.5 in the second round, the Salem, Ore., native becomes the No. 2 performer in UO history. He came into the meet with a best of 20.06m/65-9.75 from last weekend, a toss that had him at fourth on the all-time UO performance list already.
Â
In the women's high jump, Tori Sloan established an indoor PR with a 1.75m/5-8.75 clearance, and in the process moved into sole possession of seventh on the UO top-10 list. She finished sixth in Friday's competition. Sloan owns an overall best of 1.78m/5-10, an outdoor mark from last April.
Â
In the final individual event on the track, Iman Brown lowered her PR over 200 meters to 23.25 to move up a spot to No. 8 on the program's top-10 list. She finished fourth overall, and third among collegians in the field. Brown led a group of four Ducks—Jasmine Montgomery (23.65), Jadyn Mays (23.78) and Shana Grebo (24.04)—inside the top 20.
Â
Jaida Ross added more than six feet to her lifetime best with a toss of 17.72m/58-1.75 in the women's weight throw, good for seventh overall. With that mark, the Medford, Ore., native moves to No. 10 on the program's top-10 list. Ross is also scheduled to compete Saturday in the shot put.
Â
The Ducks' third top-10 performance of the day came from Pierce LaCoste in the men's long jump. On his first attempt Friday, the Eugene native posted an indoor best of 7.64m/25-0.75 to become the No. 10 performer in program history. LaCoste finished sixth overall and, based on marks entering the meet, now has the top jump in the Pac-12.
Â
In the heptathlon, Max Vollmer sits in fourth place overall with 3,134 points at the end of day thanks in large part to a strong mark of 14.96m/49-1 in the shot put. He went from sixth to fourth with the effort and held on to the spot through the high jump, the fourth event of the day. Vollmer recorded a mark of 7.09m/23-3.25 in the long jump, just off his 7.11m indoor best from last year's NCAA Championships.
Â
Nathan Poff, competing in his first collegiate heptathlon, is currently in eighth place with 2,884 points. The two-day, seven-event competition resumes Saturday at 8:15 a.m. (PT) with the 60-meter hurdles.
Â
In the final event on the track, the UO men posted a time of 9:31.07 in the distance-medley relay with a time comprised of James Gormley, Evan Mafilas, Luis Peralta and Jack Yearian. Based on time entering the meet, the Ducks have the No. 2 time in the country trailing only Oklahoma State (9:28.88) who won Friday's race.
Â
The Ducks finished third (11:11.80) in the women's DMR with a team of Aneta Konieczek, Shaniya Hall, Mia Moerck and Keely Small.
Â
Saturday's SEC Network+ broadcast is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.
