Busy Summer Continues at European Championships

Munich 2022 features four members of the 2021-22 UO roster and begins Monday at Olympiastadion.
EUGENE, Ore. – The global summer schedule continues this week with the 2022 European Athletics Championships—featuring four members of the 2021-22 UO roster—in Munich, Germany. The meet begins Monday at Olympiastadion, host venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Oregon at 2022 European Athletics Championships
Aaron Bienenfeld (Germany) – 5,000m
Shana Grebo (France) – 200m, 4x400m
Emmanuel Ihemeje (Italy) – triple jump
Alessia Zarbo (France) – 10,000m

Last month, Shana Grebo and Emmanuel Ihemeje represented their home countries at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 at Hayward Field in Eugene. Grebo helped France to a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. In addition to relay duties, she is also schedule to compete in the 200 meters.

Ihemeje, the three-time NCAA champion for the Ducks in the triple jump, also finish fifth at Worlds for his native Italy. He established an all-conditions best of 17.17m/56-4, and a six-spot improvement on his Olympic finish in Tokyo.

Aaron Bienenfeld will be running in his home country after being selected to Team Germany, and will run in the 5,000 meters. He established a personal best of 13:28.13 in the event at the Oregon Relays this past April.

The first UO opportunity for a medal will come from Alessia Zarbo in the 10,000 meters. Zarbo was the Pac-12 runner-up in the event with a time of 32:28.57, good for No. 3 on the program's all-time list.
