Four Wins Friday at Texas Tech, UW
01/27/23 | Track and Field
In victory, freshman Aaliyah McCormick became the program's fourth-fastest performer in the 60-meter hurdles.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oregon track and field team collected four wins and nine lifetime bests Friday including a top-five program performance by freshman Aaliyah McCormick in the 60-meter hurdles. The Ducks also picked up victories from Micah Williams at the Texas Tech Open and both distance-medley relays at the UW Invitational in Seattle.
McCormick matched her previous best in Friday's preliminary, posting a time of 8.20 to advance to the final as the second-fastest qualifier. She lowered that to a new PB of 8.07, just out-leaning Talie Bonds (8.08) of Arizona at the line for the victory. With that performance, McCormick moved to No. 4 on the Ducks' all-time performance list.
In the final event of the day in Lubbock, Williams recorded the fifth sub-6.50 performance of his career with a time of 6.49 to secure the win. The time is just .01 off his school record of 6.48, run twice during the 2022 season. Williams' winning time will be adjusted to 6.51—altitude—which ties the NCAA leader when it comes to the national qualifying list.
The distance crew secured two wins Friday, sweeping the distance-medley relays on day one of the UW Invitational in Seattle.
The UO women were up first with a victory by nearly nine seconds. Eugene native Maddy Elmore ran the mile leg and anchored the team to a time of 11:04.73 and the win. The quartet featured Elmore, Klaudia
Kazimierska (1200), Mia Moerck (400) and Izzy Thornton-Bott (800). All four members of Friday's DMR are back on the track Saturday in individual events.
The Men of Oregon capped the evening with Matthew Erickson, Matt Pueschner, Benjamin Reynolds and Elliott Cook combining for a time of 9:43.27 in the distance-medley relay. Erickson, Reynolds and Cook are all slated to run an 800 during Saturday's slate of events.
Jadyn Mays posted a season-best time of 7.19 in the women's 60 meters Friday evening, crossing the finish in third place. She entered the meet with a time of 7.25 from the Cougar Classic two weeks ago. Teammate and freshman Lily Jones ran 7.36 in both prelim and final, establishing a season best; she finished seventh in the final.
For the second time in as many meets this season, Jonah Tactay posted a lifetime best in the long jump in a runner-up finish Friday afternoon. He sat in sixth place through four rounds but used back-to-back PBs to moves to fourth and, ultimately, second over his final two attempts. Tactay ended the day with a best of 7.39m/24-3 in the 'B' section of the event.
Tactay is also set to compete Saturday in the 'A' section of the triple jump at the Texas Tech Open.
In the women's 'A' long jump, school-record holder Alysah Hickey finished in fourth place overall and in third among collegians. She got out to a day's best of 6.30m/20-8 on her fourth attempt. Hickey will run the 200 meters Saturday morning to close out her weekend.
Melissa Berry, running in the 5,000 meters at the UW Invitational, took more than 29 seconds off her lifetime best. She posted a time of 16:33.27 and finished second overall in the two-section final.
