Ducks' Rally Falls Short
04/21/23 | Women's Lacrosse
BERKELEY, Calif. — Oregon found itself working from behind early and could not fully recover in a 14-13 defeat to California.
The Ducks (5-9, 1-7 Pac-12) once again got off to a slow start against the Golden Bears (5-10, 2-7 Pac-12), falling behind 4-2 after the first. Oregon began to settle in after the first 15 minutes of play but was unable to overcome the deficit.
"It was a great fight by both teams," said head coach Chelsea Hoffman following Friday's loss. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get over the hump to finish the game. There were a lot of opportunities we should have capitalized on" said Hoffmann.
How it Happened: Cal grabbed early momentum in the contest behind a pair of goals from Amanda Morse. After over six minutes of action, the Ducks found the back of the net for the first time with Lauren Rismani's ninth of the season. A pair of goals from Quinnlyn Mason before Morgan McCarthy made it 4-2 entering the second.
Oregon began to find its offensive rhythm but was matched step by step by the Golden Bears. Cal once again opened the scoring in the period with a goal from Maya Lawliss. The Ducks scored three of the following four with a trio of juniors, Haley Cummins, Mara Zajac and McCarthy, adding to the scoresheet.
In the second half, Oregon increased its offensive intensity and found ways to claw back into the game. Katie Collins opened the second half action by scoring her ninth goal of the season. After Mason answered the goal for Cal, Riley Taylor and Cummins each found the back of the net with their eighth goals of the season.
The back-and-forth nature of Friday's game continued, with the Golden Bears netting a pair to make it 12-9 in their favor. The Ducks rallied to end the quarter, scoring three of the final four goals in the period, including two with under a minute from Haley Taylor and Rismani.
As the suspense of the contest rose, the pace of play slowed. Madysyn Sweeney found a tying goal in the fourth to even the game at 13-13. Moments later, Cal's Mya Wang found a goal, allowing Cal to regain the lead. That final tally would prove to be the last score for either side.
Who Stood Out: Collins scored a pair of goals while securing a career-high six draw controls. McCarthy finished with her 19th career multi-goal game.
Notable: McCarthy extended her goal-scoring streak to 25 games … Rismani recorded an assist in a game for the 10th time this season and finished with her seventh multi-assist performance ... The Ducks won the draw control advantage, 15-13, the third time getting the better in the circle … Five Oregon players scored multiple goals.
Up Next: Oregon concludes its road swing in the Bay Area with an afternoon showdown against Stanford on Sunday (1 p.m. PT, Stanford Live Stream 2).
