Ducks Sending 43 to NCAA West Prelims
05/18/23 | Track and Field
The 2023 NCAA West Preliminary will be held May 24-27 in Sacramento, Calif.
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon track and field team will send 43 entries to next week's NCAA West Preliminary. Selections and national qualifiers in the combined events were posted Thursday. This year's meet will take place May 24-27 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
The Ducks' selections are represented by 34 individuals and three relays. Oregon will have four student-athletes competing in two events—not including relays—in Mine De Klerk (shot put/discus), Jadyn Mays (100/200), Jaida Ross (shot put/discus) and Jorinde van Klinken (shot put/discus).
Pac-12 champions Lexi Ellis (triple jump), Shana Grebo (400 hurdles), Shelby Moran (hammer) and Micah Williams (100) also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary.
The UO women will also have four entries in the 1500 meters, a quartet featuring Izzy Thornton-Bott, Klaudia Kazimierska, Maddy Elmore and Emilie Girard.
Along with Thursday's announcement of prelim qualifiers, the Ducks secured a pair of national spots with Rafael Raap and Taylor Chocek in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively. The UO men have had at least one decathlon qualifier in 14 of the past 15 NCAA meets. Chocek is the first UO woman to qualify for the heptathlon since 2015.
To mirror the format of the national meet, the preliminary rounds will be contested over four days with alternating men's and women's programs. The NCAA East Preliminary will take place the same weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted by North Florida. The top 12 in each event advance to Austin, Texas, for the 2023 NCAA Championships (June 7-10).
