Jorinde van Klinken is now a three-time semifinalist for The Bowerman.
EUGENE, Ore. – Jorinde van Klinken is now a three-time semifinalist for The Bowerman as announced Wednesday afternoon by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). She was previously named a semifinalist in 2021 and 2022 during her career at Arizona State.
Â
Named for legendary Oregon head coach Bill Bowerman and first awarded in 2009, The Bowerman is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female performer in collegiate track and field.
Â
Powered by a meet-record performance, van Klinken won her third-consecutive national title in the discus on the final day of NCAA Championships in Austin. She delivered a best of 65.55m/215-0 to best her own meet record from 2021. All six measures during the competition would have won the event including three beyond 65 meters.
Â
Van Klinken accounted for 18 points at the NCAA Championships coupled with a runner-up showing in the shot put. Two weeks prior at the NCAA West Preliminary, she became the No. 6 outdoor performer in collegiate history with a 19.02m/62-5 effort in Sacramento.
Â
At the Pac-12 Championships, van Klinken swept the shot put and discus titles, helping the Women of Oregon claim the team title.
Â
Already the collegiate record holder in the discus, she added the No. 3 mark in collegiate history with a 67.05m/220-0 at the Triton Invitational in early April. By season's end, van Klinken had registered three of the top-10 throws in NCAA history. She also had a toss of 66.85m/219-4 as part of her series at the Triton meet.
Â
Van Klinken made her first impression on the collegiate record book this season in February at the Don Kirby Invitational. On her fifth attempt, she set an indoor NCAA record of 19.57m/64-2.5 in the shot put. She just eclipsed the previous record of 19.56m/64-2.25 set by Raven Saunders in 2017. Van Klinken's series that day also included measures of 18.87 and 18.99 meters.
Â
The 2023 USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year is the lone representative from the Pac-12 on Wednesday's semifinalists list. The three finalists will be announced June 26. The Bowerman winner will be announced in December as part of the USTFCCCA Convention in Aurora, Colo.
