More than 40 current, past and future UO standouts will compete this week at Hayward Field.
EUGENE, Ore. – With a primary focus on qualifying for the upcoming World Championships, more than 40 current, past and future Ducks will compete at this week's USATF Championships at Hayward Field.
In addition to the World Championships (Aug. 19-27) in Budapest, the USATF Championships is also the selection event for the NACAC U23 Championships (July 21-23) in San Jose, Costa Rica, Thorpe Cup (Aug. 12-13) in Marburg, Germany and Pan Am Games (Oct. 29-Nov. 4) in Santiago, Chile.
The 2023 USATF U20 Championships, also being contested in Eugene beginning Friday, serves as the selection event for the Pan Am U20 Championships (Aug. 4-6) in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Seven of the 15 current or graduating Ducks are in action Thursday including Pac-12 champions Jadyn Mays and Micah Williams in the first round of the 100 meters. The men's 1500 meters will feature 10 UO-related entries including Elliott Cook and redshirt freshman Rheinhardt Harrison.
Harper McClain and Alex Slenning, both on the heels of personal bests this past NCAA postseason, are slated to run the steeplechase. The current group of Ducks will also see action in the field event with two-time Pac-12 champion Lexi Ellis in the triple jump.
Among the large #ProDucks contingent competing at Hayward Field this week, six qualified for last year's World Championships. That distinct list includes Devon Allen (110H), Johnny Gregorek (1500), Alaysha Johnson (100H), Jenna Prandini (200), Raevyn Rogers (800) and Cooper Teare (1500).
Prandini and Teare are also entered in the 100 and 5,000 meters, respectively.
Five members of the Ducks' signing class are also slated for competition, primarily in the U20 ranks with Simeon Birnbaum (800), Aiden Carter (decathlon), Tayson Echohawk (1500), Will Heslam (1500) and Dan Watcke (800). Birnbaum is also entered in the senior-level 1500 meters, slated for heat two of three along with Harrison and former UO standout Sam Prakel.
