Ducks Get Dub At Home

The Oregon women won for the fifth straight time at home Friday, beating ASU for their first conference win of the season.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon won its fifth straight game at home and for the first time this season in conference play Friday, as the UO women beat Arizona State, 65-53, before 6,086 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (10-7, 1-3 Pac-12) used their size advantage to outscore ASU in the paint 34-20, and to put together a 48-27 edge in rebounding. Though only two three-pointers fell for Oregon on the night and the Ducks were 13-of-25 from the free-throw line, it all added up to a comfortable win.
"I thought we actually played a pretty good ball game tonight, a complete game at both ends," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "Our free-throw shooting wasn't great, and we've got to do a better job of finishing shots around the rim … (but) we did a great job on the boards and a great job neutralizing their leading scorers."
After the Sun Devils were 7-of-13 shooting with no turnovers in the first quarter to lead 16-14, Oregon's defense held them to 15-of-42 the rest of the way with 11 turnovers. With both teams in search of their first Pac-12 win this season, the Ducks never let ASU score more than five unanswered points in any single quarter to keep the visitors from building any momentum.
"We just had to do stop-score-stop just like we work on in practice," UO sophomore Chance Gray said. "It carried over into the game and helped us a lot."

Grace VanSlooten was the catalyst for Oregon's surge into the lead early in the second quarter, and she finished with 19 points plus 11 rebounds. Phillipina Kyei also had a double-double, with 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Gray finished as the Ducks' leading scorer with 22 points.
How It Happened: The opening quarter was tightly played, with six lead changes in the opening minutes. VanSlooten scored six of the Ducks' first 10, hitting two free throws for a 10-9 lead. Four points by Sarah Rambus gave the UO women a 14-11 lead, before ASU put together one of its three 5-0 runs within a single quarter on the night to lead 16-14 after one quarter.
After ASU scored to open the second, Oregon mounted a 10-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way. VanSlooten scored the last eight in a row during that run, and after ASU tied it at 24-24, the Ducks scored another seven in a row to take the lead for good.
"The game kind of just came to me and my teammates were finding me," VanSlooten said. "We were moving well and it lucked out I was hitting those today."

Up 33-29 at halftime, Oregon scored the first seven of the third quarter — the last three by VanSlooten for a 40-29 lead. After ASU closed within 42-35 by hitting threes on consecutive possessions, the Ducks finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 49-35; those two threes ended up being Arizona State's only points of the third quarter.
"Defensively we were on point all night," Graves said, making a point to specifically mention freshman Sofia Bell, who had eight rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal despite going scoreless. "She got her hands on a lot of balls; we call her 'The Deflector.'"
By the fourth quarter, about the only question was whether Oregon would make a three-pointer in the game. Gray took care of that by knocking down two on consecutive possessions for a 59-43 lead, and moments later she fed Kyei for a basket that gave the Ducks their biggest lead of the night, 63-45.
