Eight Wins Saturday at UW Preview
01/13/24 | Track and Field
Klaudia Kazimierska was one of three Ducks with top-10 program performances in Seattle.
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon track and field team posted eight wins Saturday at the UW Preview inside the Dempsey Indoor facility. The Ducks also had top-10 program performances from Klaudia Kazimierska and Maddy Elmore in the women's mile and James Harding in the men's 600 meters. In the team's win count, Jadyn Mays was a double winner in the 60 and 200 meters.
Competing in the top section of the women's mile, Kazimierska strengthened her hold on the No. 2 spot in program history with her time of 4:31.87 in a runner-up showing. She entered the day with a best of 4:32.03 from last season. Elmore, off her school-record 3K performance just over a month ago, lowered her lifetime best to 4:33.04 to become the seventh-fastest mile performer in UO history.
Elmore broke Jessica Hull's 3,000-meter school record at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 2) with an 8:50.43 outing. The Eugene native was back on the track Saturday for a 2-3 finish with newcomer Mia Barnett in the 800 meters. The pair crossed the line in 2:08.87 and 2:09.38, respectively.
Barnett (4:37.89) and fellow newcomer Dalia Frias (4:46.32) also ran in the mile. Frias finished just two seconds off her lifetime best in the event despite a fall during the third lap.
Harding, a redshirt freshman from New Zealand, got his Oregon career started with a victory over 600 meters. He stopped the clock in 1:18.83, good for the fifth-fastest UO time in the event. Harding led a 1-2-5 finish for the UO men with Matt Pueschner (1:20.40) and Vincent Corday (1:21.96), respectively.
The Ducks' first win of the day came from Mason Strunk taking the top spot in the men's weight throw. He finished with a day's best of 20.70m/67-11, more than five feet beyond the event runner-up. Strunk, the No. 2 performer in program history (20.84m), would have won Saturday's meet with any of his four legal marks.
Aaliyah McCormick was the team's first winner on the track Saturday with time of 8.26 in the final. She was the top-overall qualifier out of the prelims (8.41). The UO sophomore clipped the final hurdle but was well clear of the field to secure the win, finishing .31 ahead of runner-up Sarah Marske of Nevada.
The Women of Oregon added a victory with Mays in the 60 meters. Mays was the top qualifier in the event at 7.33 and lowered her time to 7.24 in the final. The Ducks put six into the final with transfer Alexa Rossum (7.43) crossing in third place overall. Based on times entering Saturday's final, Mays' time ranks third in the nation.
Mays made it 2-for-2 with another first-place showing later in the day at 200 meters. She crossed the finish line in 23.60, leading a group of eight UO women inside the top 10. The Ducks took the top-four spots with Mays followed by Ella Clayton (24.13) in second, Shaniya Hall (24.24) in third and Rossum (24.50) in fourth.
With her 7.64 in the 60-meter prelims, Clayton registered indoor bests in both sprint events Saturday.
In a meet-record performance, Jaida Ross won the women's shot put. The Medford, Ore., native got out to a measure of 18.18m/59-7.75 on her first throw of the season. She surpassed the previous meet mark of 18.11m/59-5 set by former teammate Jorinde van Klinken last season. Ross finished just two inches shy of her lifetime best from a season ago.
Jack Normand led a 1-2 finish for the Men of Oregon in the high jump, clearing 2.10m/6-10.75 to finish first ahead of freshman teammate Osawese Agbonkonkon (2.05m/6-8.75). Assured of victory, Normand went on to take attempts at a would-be seven-foot clearance.
The team of Clayton, Hall, Lakely Doht-Barron and Katriina Wright closed out the day with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet combined for a winning time of 3:40.43, just off the meet record of 3:40.38 set by Stanford in 2016.
In a pair of top-three field results for UO newcomers, Ryann Porter (triple jump) and Annika Williams (high jump) finished second and third, respectively. Porter missed the victory by a quarter of an inch, getting out to a best of 12.22m/40-1.25 on her final attempt. Williams, a combined-events specialist, recorded a final clearance at 1.75m/5-8.75 in her Oregon debut.
Rafael Raap, runner-up in the decathlon at last year's Pac-12 Championships, notched a lifetime best in the shot put in his season debut. On his final attempt, Raap got the implement out to 15.31m/50-2.75 to secure his second-place finish. He had four marks Saturday beyond his previous all-time best.
