Ducks Fall at No. 8 Stanford
01/19/24 | Women's Basketball
STANFORD, Calif. — No. 8 Stanford saw five players score in double figures, led by 21 from Kiki Irafen, to help the Cardinal defeat Oregon Friday night 88-63 at Maples Pavilion.
After the Cardinal raced out to a 20-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game, Oregon responded 13 unanswered points of its own and finished the quarter on a 15-5 run. The Ducks trimmed Stanford's lead to just five points on a Sofia Bell 3-pointer midway through the second quarter before seeing the Cardinal close the half by scoring 12 straight.
"You spot a good team like Stanford 20 points at home, you're in trouble," said UO head coach Kelly Graves. "We were playing uphill the whole time, but I thought we handled that and made a couple runs of our own and got back into it. I thought the last three minutes of the first half and the first few minutes of the second half really were the difference.
"There were some positives tonight. We battled as best we could, I thought we were okay on the boards and took care of the ball relatively well. They got hot and Kiki (Iriafen) was a load inside."
Chance Gray led the Ducks with 19 points and five assists. Gray knocked down 3-of-5 3-point attempts, including two on back-to-back trips down the floor in the first quarter to help UO claw back into the game. Phillipina Kyei added 14 points and six rebounds, as the duo were the only two to crack double-digit scoring for Oregon.
Sofia Bell drained all three of her 3-point shots in the first half, as her and Gray combined to go 6-for-8 from downtown. Bell finished the night with nine points and four rebounds.
Iriafen went 10-for-17 from the field and added 15 rebounds and two blocks. Talana Lepolo finished with 13 points and eight assists, while Nuny Agara added 12 off the bench. Elena Bosgana registered 11 points and three assists.
The win was the 1,202nd in the career of Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer, tying her with Duke legend Mike Krzyzewski for the most in NCAA history (men's or women's).
"Tara is a good friend of mine and I am really proud of her and happy for her," Graves said of VanDerveer's milestone. "She sets such a high standard for everybody, for our whole profession."
How It Happened: The Cardinal scored the game's first 20 points, getting eight points from Bosgana in that span. Stanford connected on seven of its first eight shots from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three, while Oregon missed its first eight field goal tries.
The Ducks responded by scoring the next 13 points, with Gray hitting a 3-pointer on consecutive trips down the floor to cap the burst. Kennedy Basham accounted for four points to go with a 3-pointer from Bell to trim the deficit to 10 at the end of one, 25-15.
In the second quarter, Oregon put together an 11-2 run, including eight straight, trimming Stanford's lead to just five at the 4:40 mark on Bell's third 3-pointer of the half. The Cardinal then closed the half by scoring 12 unanswered points to take a 43-26 lead to the locker room.
Bell led all players with nine first-half points, as she went 3-for-3 from the 3-point line. Gray added eight behind a pair of 3-pointers. The Ducks went 5-for-9 from deep in the half, but shot just 9-of-33 from the floor overall (27 percent).
UO got four points apiece from Gray, Kyei, Grace VanSlooten and Priscilla Williams, as the Ducks shot 58 percent from the floor in the third quarter. Stanford began the quarter on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to 22 points. Later, Oregon scored six unanswered, with Williams responsible for four points, to cut the deficit to 16, 54-38. Iriafen scored 10 of the Cardinal's 20 points in the third, as she went 5-for-7 from the field.
Neither team put together a run longer than seven points in the fourth quarter. Gray and Kyei each added seven points in the final frame to account for 14 of UO's 20 points. The Ducks shot 54 percent from the field in the fourth and 56 percent in the second half.
