Oregon Wins Second Straight
02/04/24 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team remained perfect at home and picked up its second straight win with a 5-2 victory over Saint Mary's Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
"I thought we were challenged in doubles early and it was great for us to get that point, especially being down and then coming back and rallying behind Nina (Geissler) and Sophie (Luescher)," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "Uxia and Jo-Yee did a great job taking care of business on court two."
The Ducks and Gaels split the first two doubles matches, as Jo-Yee Chan and Uxia Martinez Moral picked up a 6-2 victory at second doubles while Candela Aparisi and Karin Young dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3.
Trailing 4-2 at No. 1, Nina Geissler and Sophie Luescher rallied to even the set at four games apiece and later tied the match again at 6-6. The doubles point was then decided by a tiebreaker, with the Ducks scoring the final three points to win by a score of 7-4.
It marked the fourth time in five matches that UO has clinched the doubles point.

UO won the first four singles matches, all in straight sets, to seal the match and the Gaels 5-0. Geissler and Luescher finished first, with Geissler winning 6-2, 6-1 on court two and Luescher earning a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1.
Young's 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 earned the decisive fourth point and Chan, playing her second straight match and the third spot in the lineup, followed closely with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
"On one, three and five I thought we did a good job of closing matches out in two sets, not letting them get away," Nagle said. "(Saint Mary's) fought hard and tried to get back into those matches but I thought we did a good job of closing out. It's a good step in the right direction."
The Gaels' two points came in third-set tiebreakers at Nos. 4 and 6. Martinez Moral and Juliette Daries split the first two sets at fourth singles, as did Aparisi and Sofia Daryaie.
Chan, Geissler, Luescher, Martinez Moral and Young are all now tied for the team lead with three singles wins on the spring season.
Oregon continue its homestand on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
