
U.S. Olympic Trials Begin Friday in Eugene

Twenty-five current or former Oregon athletes are scheduled to compete including seven in the men's 1500 meters.
EUGENE, Ore. – Two week after hosting the best collegians in the country, Hayward Field will now serve as host for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials which begin Friday morning. Twenty-five current or former Oregon athletes are scheduled to compete including six in the men's 1500 meters. First round of that event is Friday at 5:22 p.m.
Day one of the Trials will feature four Ducks from this past season's roster. Shelby Moran will be up first with qualifying in the hammer at 11 a.m. Jadyn Mays and Elliott Cook take on the first round of the 100 and 1500 meters, respectively, while Ryann Porter will compete in triple jump qualifying.
Cook, Mays and Moran were all Pac-12 champions this year. At the NCAA Championships, Cook was the runner-up at 1500 meters, Mays was third in the 100 and Moran finished fourth in the hammer. Porter, in her first season at Oregon, moved to No. 4 (13.01m/42-8.25) on the UO indoor list; outdoor redshirt.
Seven past NCAA champions for the Ducks will also be action Friday with Matthew Centrowitz, English Gardner, Cole Hocker, Jenna Prandini, Raevyn Rogers, Sabrina Southerland and Cooper Teare. (Update, 6/21: Centrowitz has withdrawn from the compettiion)
Centrowitz (1500) and Gardner (4x100) are Olympic gold medalists from 2016 in Rio. Both Gardner and Prandini were part of the silver-medal 4x100 relay in Tokyo while Rogers kicked her way to the bronze medal in the 800 meters. Hocker, the reigning Trials champion at 1500 meters, went on to be a finalist during his Olympic debut in 2021.
Eugene and Hayward Field are hosting the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for an eighth time, and for the fifth-consecutive edition. By and large, the top three in each event will earn a spot on Team USA. To qualify, an athlete must also have achieved the Olympic standard or have a high enough world ranking.
