Nielsen Breaks School Record in the Mile
01/25/25 | Track and Field
Wilma Nielsen becomes the No. 3 performer in collegiate history.
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon junior Wilma Nielsen broke the school record in the mile Saturday at the Dr. Sander Scorcher in New York. Nielsen ran a blistering time of 4:25.89 for a runner-up showing in the elite section of the event, and with the effort, also moved to No. 3 on the all-time collegiate list.
Katelyn Tuohy, now running professionally for adidas, won in 4:25.54. The Dr. Sander Scorcher was contested at The Armory.
"It started kind of fast and I went up to the front," Nielsen said in a post-race interview. "When the pacer stepped out, I was like 'I know Katelyn Tuohy is really good.' I wanted to hang on for as long as I could and I really did. I almost got her so I'm really happy about that time."
With Saturday's performance, Nielsen is the first UO woman to dip below 4:30 in the mile and takes over the top spot previously held by teammate Klaudia Kazimierska. Nielsen's previous indoor best of 4:31.94 came at the BU Season Opener in early December.
The Gothenburg, Sweden, native also moves to second on her native country's all-time indoor list. In addition, Nielsen currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the world this year. She is the second collegian to run a sub-4:30 this season after Kimberley May of Providence ran 4:28.33 two weeks ago. Previous NCAA leader Alex Carlson of Northern Arizona ran 4:37.27 at altitude last weekend; the time was converted to 4:27.20 for national qualifying purposes.
Nielsen was one of three collegians in Saturday's race along with Princeton's Mena Scatchard (4:32.95) and Virginia's Margot Appleton (4:33.34), both producing top-10 NCAA times for this indoor season.
Next Meet: Razorback Invitational (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Fayetteville, Ark.
At the end of the regular season, the top 16 declared athletes in each event and top 12 relays advance to the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships (March 14-15) in Virginia Beach.
