03/29/25 | Baseball
Sophomore shortstop Maddox Molony homered twice in both games while driving in a combined nine runs on the day. He finished the double dip 5-for-9 with four runs scored . Anson Aroz went deep in both games finishing the two games 3-for-9 with five RBI and four runs scored. Cleanup hitter Jacob Walsh homered in game one and finished the day 4-for-8 with a RBI and four runs scored.
Oregon (20-7, 8-4 Big Ten) took leads into the eighth inning in both games, but Ohio State (8-16, 2-7 Big Ten) scored a combined seven runs in the eighth to steal a pair of victories.
Game 1: Ohio State 11, #10 Oregon 10
For the second consecutive game, Oregon hit four home runs and built four-run leads twice and a three-run lead once, but the Ducks struggled on the mound and on defense allowing the Buckeyes to rally for an 11-10 win.
Molony homered twice, to run his total to three in the series, while Aroz and Jacob Walsh each added a homer. Oregon built leads of 4-0, 7-4 and 10-6 but in the end, it was not enough to hold off the Buckeyes.
How It Happened: For the second day in a row, Oregon jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning, but instead of a one run like yesterday the Ducks put four on the board.
After Ohio State starter Byan Butler loaded the bases with three base on balls, Aroz gave the Ducks the lead with a sacrifice fly. One pitch later, it was 4-0. Molony lined a two-out three-run home run over the left-field wall.
Ohio State rallied to tie the game with one in the first and three in the second before Oregon regained the lead. Burke-Lee Mabeus led off the third with the Ducks' first triple of the season before Walsh walked to put runners at the corners. Aroz followed with a moon-shot home run over the right-field wall for a 7-4 lead.
Oho State cut the lead to one with single runs in the third and fourth, before Oregon went deep again. And once again it was Molony doing the honors with two outs. He lined a 1-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for a three-run Oregon lead.
Walsh added to Oregon's long-ball damage to lead off the seventh inning. The Ducks' all-time career home run leader snapped a 74-plate appearance home-run drought with a line drive off the batter's eye beyond the center-field fence to make it 10-6.
The Buckeyes scored twice in the seventh and three times in the eighth to overcome Oregon's last four-run lead.
Game 2: Ohio State 8, No. 10 Oregon 6
Molony homered twice more and Aroz added his second of the day but UO couldn't hold a late lead for the second time during the doubleheader.
How It Happened: Oregon took the early lead for the third time in the series when Aroz belted his third homer of the series, a solo shot in the second, for a 1-0 lead.
OSU answered with three in the second and one in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Molony ripped his third home run of the day in the fourth inning, a three-run shot with no outs to tie it.
The Ducks took a one-run lead in the sixth inning when Carter Garate scored on a muffed throw from the first baseman to the pitcher covering first.
Ohio State took the lead in the eighth inning with four runs, before Maddox supplied his final fireworks of the doubleheader hitting a solo homer in the ninth.
Doubleheader Notes: In game one of the doubleheader, Jacob Walsh made his 200th career start … Walsh joined Tanner Smith, J.J. Altobelli and Gabe Matthews as the only Ducks to start 200 games in a career … The series loss was the first of the season for Oregon.
On Deck: Oregon steps out of Big Ten play for a midweek road game at Portland on Wednesday.
