Slow Start Haunts Ducks against Northwestern
04/13/25 | Women's Lacrosse
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Oregon lacrosse team was overpowered on the draw on Sunday afternoon, leading to a 19-10 loss to No. 3 Northwestern at Martin Stadium.
The Ducks were outscored 10-2 in the second quarter and trailed 17-5 at the half, but outscored the Wildcats 5-2 in the second half. The Oregon defense shut out NU in the final 20 minutes of play.
Northwestern (12-2, 6-0 Big Ten) posted a 22-10 draw control advantage, which led to a 34-21 shot differential. Oregon (6-9, 0-7 Big Ten) struggled to keep possession in the midfield against the Wildcat defense, clearing the ball successfully 10 times in its 16 chances.
Bri Carrasquillo led the offense with four goals and an assist while Anna Simmons and Rachel Pallo each net two scores. Oregon goalkeepers combined to make eight saves.
How It Happened: Simmons got Oregon on the board with her 32nd goal of the season after Northwestern opened the game with four quick goals. Carrasquillo tallied her first of the day off a find from Jenae Sperling and Simmons struck paydirt with seconds left in the opening quarter to make it a 7-3 ballgame after 15 minutes.
Carrasquillo scored twice in the second quarter to secure her second hat trick in as many games, but Northwestern scored 10 goals to take a 17-5 lead into the half.
Kate Shields subbed in at goalkeeper to start the third quarter, making all four of her saves in the frame. Sperling opened the half with her 11th goal of the year, but the Wildcats responded with two of their own.
Lyla Hurley scored the last goal of the third quarter, extending her consecutive games with a point streak to 13, and kicked off a 4-0 Oregon scoring run to end the game. Rachel Pallo led off the final quarter with a score off a feed from Simmons before Carrasquillo net her team-leading 40th goal of the year. The graduate student then found Pallo, who buried it to bring the lead back down to single digits, but the Ducks could get no closer.
Notable: Oregon's 10 goals tied for the most scored on Northwestern this season by a team not ranked in the top two … Lexi Jenkins picked up her second yellow card at the 6:21 mark in the second quarter and hat to sit for the rest of the game … Carrasquillo now sits at 91 career goals, 40 of which have come this season with the Ducks … During her 13-game point streak, Hurley has tallied 15 goals and 11 assists.
Up Next: The Ducks close out the regular season Saturday at USC (1 p.m., B1G+).
