Ducks Push No. 58 Spartans, Fall 4-3
04/13/25 | Women's Tennis
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sunday's match between Oregon and No. 58 Michigan State came down to the final singles match, but the Spartans were able to come away with a 4-3 victory at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Ducks (8-12, 1-10) began the day with a 1-0 lead after they picked up the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Candela Aparisi and Marjorie Souza started off with a 6-0 win at No. 3 before MSU won at No.2, meaning the doubles point would be decided on court one. Tilde Jagare and Juliet Santitto got by their opponent 6-3 to take a 1-0 lead headed into singles.
It was Jagare and Santitto's sixth dual doubles win of the spring, and their second at the top spot in the lineup. Aparisi and Souza also earned their sixth doubles victory and their team-leading fourth during Big Ten play.
Michigan State (13-10, 5-7) responded to take the lead after it won the first two singles matches at Nos. 3 and 6, but UO freshman Patsy Daughters answered with a straight-set win on court four to tie the match at 2-2. The win was the 10th dual singles win of Daughters' freshman campaign to tie for the team lead.
Santitto forced two tiebreakers in her match on court five, but fell in both sets to give the Spartans a 3-2 with two matches remaining – both of which headed to a third set. Both Souza and Karin Young rebounded from first-set losses to force a third set.
Young completed her three-set comeback victory over Ellie Blackford at No. 2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3. The win marked Young's eighth at the second spot in the Ducks' order and third Big Ten play. However, Souza suffered a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 loss on court one for the Spartans' fourth team point.
Ten of Oregon's 12 losses this spring have come to ranked opponents, including nine of 10 conference losses. The loss was the fourth 4-3 defeat this spring – all coming against ranked teams.
The Ducks return home for their final home weekend of the season, hosting Iowa on Friday at 11 a.m. before Senior Day on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
