Ducks Suffer Just Fourth Loss of Season

Oregon dropped a midweek matchup with Loyola Marymount on Monday.
EUGENE, Ore. — A record-setting day on the basepaths and a raucous Jane Sanders Stadium filled with kids on Field Trip Day weren't enough to prevent just the fourth loss of the season by the Oregon softball team on Monday.
Loyola Marymount put together a four-run second inning that proved to be the difference in a 5-3 victory over the No. 6 Ducks in a nonconference matchup. Oregon (35-4) returns to Big Ten play this weekend at Minnesota, bringing a share of first place in the standings into the road trip.
"I just think all three cylinders were not good today — and they played great," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "They played great defense, they were clutch with their offense and their pitching gave them an opportunity to win. Will we grow from this? One hundred percent. I know this game right here will do big, big things for us. I hate for this to happen, but we just weren't good enough today."
Monday's loss came despite the Ducks setting a program record for stolen bases in a season by the team, with Kai Luschar stealing second twice to set an individual UO single-season record for steals. Luschar also scored from second on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

"Our speed on the basepaths obviously gives us opportunities to win every single game with the speed that we have," Lombardi said, "being able to turn singles into doubles and just put pressure on the defense to have to make plays."
How It Happened: UO starter Taylour Spencer (3-2) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the first, and the Ducks gave her a lead in the bottom of the inning. Luschar walked and stole second, and she scored on a bunt single by Paige Sinicki that induced a throwing error. Sinicki then stole Oregon's record-setting 127th base of the season, later scoring on an RBI groundout by Katie Flannery.
But Loyola Marymount hit for the cycle as a team in the top of the first, putting together a four-run inning capped by a two-run homer.
Luschar walked again to lead off the third, and stole her 42nd base of the year, a new UO record. She scored from second on a flyout to deep center by Rylee McCoy, bringing the Ducks back within 4-3.

Loyola Marymount added some insurance in the fourth with a solo homer, however. Oregon's best chance to answer came in the bottom of the seventh, when the Ducks put two on with one out, but they were unable to capitalize.
Notable: Oregon's team record for stolen bases broke the mark of 126 previously set in 2007. … That was the same year Suzie Barnes stole 41 bases, the UO single-season record until Luschar broke it Monday. … Loyola Marymount's five runs were the most allowed by the Ducks since March 8. … Field Trip Day drew a season-high crowd of 2,533 to The Jane.
Up Next: The Ducks open a series at Minnesota on Friday (3 p.m., B1G+).
