The Ducks’ victory doubled as the 1,000th win in program history.
EUGENE, Ore. — After dropping sets three and four to find itself in a fifth set Saturday, the Oregon volleyball team delivered a 3-2 victory (25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 15-9) over Colorado State inside Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks improved to 5-0 and with the result, registered the 1,000th win in program history.
Oregon got double-double performances from senior Cora Taylor (34 assists, 10 digs) and freshman Maria Tabacuks (11 kills, 10 digs). Tabacuks was one of four Ducks to reach double figures, paced by junior Valentina Vaulet's match-high 17 kills. Ksenija Tomic and Alanah Clemente had 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
Defensively, freshman libero Natalie Fukumoto led all players with 20 digs and Iva Sucurovic continued her strong play at the net with seven blocks. The Ducks finished the night with 13.0 total team blocks.
How It Happened: In the decisive fifth frame, Oregon jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to force Colorado State (3-3) to call an early timeout. The lead was six—up 11-5—after back-to-back kills from Tabacuks and Tomic. The Ducks never trailed in the set and on its first match point, secured the win with another kill by Tabacuks.
Playing in its first five setter of the season, Oregon responded by hitting .600 in the race to 15; the team combined to hit .125 in sets three and four. Tabacuks, Tomic and Vaulet each had four kills in the fifth.
Both team struggled offensively through the first set but the Ducks found a rhythm in the second, hitting .455 on its way to claiming a 2-0 match lead. CSU used mid-set runs in both the third and fourth to gain control of play—led 15-10 in each—before pulling even on the match scoreboard.
Eve Wilson led the Rams with 15 kills, one of three Colorado State players in double figures.
Notable: Fukumoto is the fifth different player to lead the team in digs in five matches … Vaulet has at least one ace in each match including two or more in four of five matches … Marlee Arrington had two blocks in her first appearance this season … first win of the season when getting out-hit (.261 to .253) and out-blocked (14.0 to 13.0).
Up Next: The non-conference slate continues with the LBSU Tournament (Sept. 11-13) with matches against San Diego State, host Long Beach State and UC Riverside.
