The Eaton File
Returns in 2008 as Duck sophomore ready to continue his rapid maturation into a national-caliber decathlete with explosive individual event talent and NCAA credentials already in the jumps and sprints. Was an NCAA decathlon provisional qualifier and Pac-10 runner-up in '07 and looks now for first NCAA invitation with the national provisional and automatic standards set at 6,900 and 7,500 points in '08. Indoors, is also a returning NCAA provisional pentathlon qualifier and will point towards the same national qualifying standards (provisional 5,350 / automatic 5,600). His explosive speed and jumping ability catapulted him to an NCAA long jump invitation outdoors and fifth-place Pac-10 and West finishes late in the '07 season. On the track outdoors, was the only freshman to run on both of UO's NCAA qualifying 4x100m and 4x400m relays in '07. After the collegiate slate, he placed top three in the long jump and decathlon in the USA Junior Championships (second / third) and competed in the former event in the Pan American Junior Championships. Enters sophomore indoor season ranked fifth all-time for UO in the long jump (24-3) and only 15 points shy of the same all-time position in the pentathlon with his freshman best (5,370). Could also join several Ducks' all-time outdoor lists and needs marks of 25-5 1/2 in the long jump and 7,532 points in the decathlon. Scored second in Pac-10 Championships decathlon (7,123), only his second career decathlon after he debuted in late March in the Jim Click Shootout (first, 6,977). Competed in NCAA Championships long jump (18th-prelims, 24-2 1/2) after he placed fifth in weeks prior in the West Regional (fifth, PR 24-6 1/4) and Pac-10 Championships (23-8 1/4w). In relay action, helped 4x100m relay to third-place finishes in the Pac-10 and West Regional (40.63 / 40.26) and 14th-place effort in the NCAA finale (40.77) - four positions better than its pre-meet seeding.
