One of the greatest distance runners in UO history led Oregon to the 2007 NCAA Cross Country championship before redshirting the 2008 track season to focus on the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, where he qualified for his first Olympic Games by finishing second in the 10,000 meters (27:43.11) at Historic Hayward Field. Earned All-America status for his runner-up finish (29:24) at the 2007 NCAA cross country meet. It was the eighth All-America award of his running career at Oregon. Was the 2007 NCAA West Regional individual champion (29:36). Finished second (22:59) to teammate Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships. 2007 World Championships 10,000m qualifier and U.S. runner-up. American collegiate 10,000m record holder (27:33.48). Two-time NCAA 10,000m runner-up and UO record-holder in the event. 2006 Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Athlete of Year. Overall owns six career All-America awards in track and two in cross country.
2007: All-American (Cross Country). 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials participant. Ran in three races in the fall: the Pac-10, NCAA West Regional and the NCAA Championships, finishing first once and second in the other two events. Opened up at the Pac-10 Championships where he help Oregon win the team title with a runner-up finish (22:59) to teammate Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott. Was the individual champion at the NCAA West Regional (29:36) in leading the Ducks to the team crown. Ran second at the NCAA Championships (29:24), leading five Oregon All-Americans across the finish line as the Men of Oregon won their first cross country national championship since 1977. Earned All-America honors for the second time in cross country and the eight-time overall in his UO running career. Redshirted the 2008 track season to concentrate on the Olympic Trials.
2006-07: World Championships Qualifier (10,000m). All-American (Cross Country / Track). Placed sixth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships ? the 20th Duck to finish top 10 in the event. Overall, led team in all five of his races with Oregon’s 10th Pac-10 individual cross country title and another win in the Mike Hodges Invitational (23:03.2), and top-five finishes in Bill Dellinger Invitational (second) and West Regional (fourth). Outdoors on track, became UO’s 14th World Championships men’s distance qualifier. Earlier in postseason, claimed second NCAA 10,000m runner-up placing (28:56.19), staked UO’s second-ever Pac-10 5,000m-10,000m double in same season, and won West Regional 5,000m. During season, broke the UO 10,000m record once held by Bill McChesney, Jr. (27:50.82, 1982). Also ranked fourth outdoors among collegians in ’07 in 5,000m (13:30.49) and sixth all-time for UO. Indoors, became first Duck to stake four individual All-America honors in his career with his finishes in the NCAA 3,000m and 5,000m (fourth, 7:56.79 / third, 13:40.38). During season, ran school records in 3,000m and 5,000m and ranked top five nationally among collegians in each (fifth, 7:54.19 / third, 13:38.62). Repeat Pac-10 and National All-Academic Track and Field First Team selection.
2005-06: NCAA All-American (Track). In cross country, led team in both of his races ? the Willamette Invitational (sixth) and Pre-NCAA Invitational (12th) where he suffered a minor injury. In NCAA Indoor Championships earned All-America laurels with top-six placings in 5,000m (fifth) and 3,000m (sixth). During regular season, his NCAA indoor automatic qualifying marks in the 5,000m (13:48.51) and 3,000m (7:54.90) then ranked first and third in school history. Outdoors, scored top-four finishes in the Pac-10 Championships 5,000m and 10,000m (third / second). Earned NCAA outdoor 5,000m invitation after he placed third in the West Regional. Pac-10 and National All-Academic Track and Field First Team selection.
2004-05: NCAA All-American (Track). During the outdoor track and field season, was team’s high point scorer in the Pac-10 (5,000m, fourth, 13:57.43; 10,000m, second, 29:28.09) and NCAA Championships (10,000m, second, 28:23.75) and helped UO to the Pac-10 team title and a ninth-place NCAA effort. Took second in 1,500m in USA Junior Championships (3:47.47) and fourth in Pan American Junior Championships (3:50.96). In between those races, ran 1,500m / 3,000m double in the Einlauf meet in Germany in July (PR 3:44.39 / 8:04.62). A week later broke the U.S. junior 3,000m record in Lignano, Italy (7:49.16).
Before Oregon: Led U.S. squad in 2005 World Junior Cross Country Championships (20th) in France in mid-March after he won the U.S. junior title in mid-February.
Prep: Claimed second in the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships as a senior (14:57). Won state cross country titles as a senior (14:55) and junior (14:56), and took sixth as a sophomore. Track and Field News Boys Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2004. As senior, ran state 1,500m record (3:45.3) en route to mile best (4:01.8). Also in ’01, led U.S. prep rankings in the mile (4:01.8), 3,000m (prep record 8:03.57) and 5,000m (U.S. junior record 13:37.91) and ranked second in the 1,500m (3:45.3). In 4A state meet as a senior, won the 1,500m (3:49.76) and 3,000m (8:22.00). Also scored in state meet as a junior in 1,500m (second, 3:53.58) and 3,000m (first, 8:14.36), and as a sophomore in 1,500m (eighth, 3:59.68) and 3,000m (third, 8:37.36). Trained under former Duck distance great Alberto Salazar (UO ?81).
