Defending Pac-10 cross country individual champion returns for his final season. The league’s Athlete of the Year for cross country leads an impressive group of five All-Americans returning for the defending national champion Men of Oregon in 2008.
2007: All-American/Pac-10 Athlete of the Year (Cross Country). Claimed second All-America honor by placing ninth (29:57) in his third NCAA trip. Was named the Pac-10 Athlete of the Year for winning his first Pac-10 title (22:55) and leading the Ducks to the team championship. Two weeks later, helped the Ducks repeat as the NCAA West Region champions with a third place finish (30:04).
2006-07: NCAA Qualifier (10,000m). In his first track season in the UO uniform, capped season with strong NCAA 10,000m debut (ninth, 29:13.43). A month earlier, helped team win Pac-10 Championship with top finishes in 10,000m (third, 29:11.66) and 5,000m (seventh, 14:17.02). Earlier in outdoor season, ran NCAA provisional mark in 10,000m career debut in Stanford Invitational (29:00.52). He did not compete indoors. Chosen to All-Pac-10 First Team for his sixth-place Pac-10 Championships finish and helped team win its 14th Pac-10 Championship. Also scored for Ducks in championship slate in the West Regional and NCAA Championships as squad finished first and fifth, respectively.
2005-06: Redshirted. Competed unattached in three West Coast outdoor meets. Clocked a two-second personal best in 5,000m in Stanford Invitational (fifth, 13:55.18). In mid-April, kicked to win in Bill McChesney Jr. Memorial Twilight Mile in the Oregon Invitational (4:04.94). Did not race cross country.
2004-05: All-American (Cross Country). Outdoors, earned All-Mountain West Conference all-league honors for University of New Mexico in the 800m (third, 1:50.76) and 1,500m (second, 3:52.87). Owned outdoor season bests in the 800m (1:50.76), 1,500m (3:46.53) and 5,000m (14:03.32). Indoors, scored for squad in Mountain West Championships in mile (sixth) and also led off runner-up distance medley relay. In cross country, earned All-America honors in NCAA Championships (14th, 31:17) as New Mexico finished ninth as a team. In Mountain West Conference Championships, won the individual title (24:44) and helped team to third place.
Prep: All-American. As a senior, led the U.S. in the 2-mile (8:45.44) with his winning time from the 2004 Outdoor Championships in Raleigh, N.C. - also the ninth-fastest time in U.S. prep history. Three weeks later, ran a mile personal best (4:02.65) in Portland, and ranked second nationally. As a senior in cross country, finished third in the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships after he won the West Regional by three seconds. Won 2003 5A state cross country title by almost 1 1/2 minutes. Previously attended Kapenguria High School in Kenya where he also won the Kenyan national high school 1,500m title.
Personal: Sociology major. Minoring in business administration. Lived in Albuquerque in high school with his uncle Simon Sawe, a professional runner. Originally from Eldoret, Kenya, and speaks English and Swahili. His older brother, Duncan Kibet, won the 2006 San Jose Half-Marathon in 1:00.22 - the second-fastest time ever on U.S. soil.
