Arizona State Defeats Ducks 3-0 in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. ? Oregon freshman Sarah Mason had 10 kills to lead the Duck offense, but it wasn't enough to fend off off the Arizona State Sun Devils, who defeated the Ducks 30-17, 30-26, 33-31 in front of 687 fans at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz. Friday evening. The Sun Devils improve to 7-10 overall, 2-6 Pac-10, while Oregon fell to 3-15, 0-9.
"We started off the match a little slow, but we definately picked it up. Kelly (Russell) and Sarah (Mason) again led us offensively, both with 10.5 points," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "I'm pleased with how we ended the match tonight. We continue to progress and our goal is to get the number of points per game up to about 21."
Mason and Russell had 10 and 9 kills, respectively and each had 10.5 points in the match to lead the offensive attack for the Ducks. For the fifth consecutive match, Mason had 10 kills or more. Jodi Bell has her season best in attack percentage with .500 over her .400 against Temple on August 30. Freshman Kristen Bitter led the way defensively with seven blocks, leading the Ducks with an overall 65 total blocks on the season. Lauren Westendorf and Katie O'Neil each had 10 digs in the match. The Ducks led the third game in hitting percentage with .343 to the Sun Devils' .292.
Arizona State was led by Juliana Escobar, Natalie Harris, and Mandy Stephens, who had 16, 12, and 11 kills, respectively to lead the Sun Devil offense. Courtney Blocher had 12 digs to lead the Arizona State defense, who held the edge in digs 45-37.
Next up, Oregon will host UCLA on Thursday October 23 and USC on Friday October 24 at McArthur Court, both starting at 7 p.m.
