10/24/03 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE - The University of Oregon women's soccer team fell in its first Pac-10 home game of the season Friday to No. 17 Stanford, 3-1, at Pape' Field.
Duck junior midfielder and Virginia transfer Erin Engelhardt paced the Duck offense with her first goal for Oregon to draw matters within 3-1 late in the second period, but Stanford didn't allow another score to raise their record to 8-6-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in the conference. The loss lowered Oregon's record to 7-8-0 overall and 1-3 in Pac-10 play.
The Cardinal scored the first of three straight goals at 6:05 on Allyson Marquands' 16-yard low liner to the left side, set up on a 8-yard midfield pass by Brittany Oliveira. The Cardinal's Natalie Spilger scored nine minutes later at 17:22 on a header 7 yards center that went high inside the right post, and was played of a Marquand corner kick. Stanford's final goal came at 58:46 by Oliveira on a rainbow lob from 18 yards center that arced over Duck keeper Domenique Lainez who had started to charge out.
Oregon was led in shots by reshirt sophomore forward Nicole Garbin (3), and three Ducks each had one shot on goal, including Engelhardt, Mele French and Garbin. French had another great opportunity for a score late in the first half at 43:35 when a hard line drive at the center edge of the penalty box was snabbed by Cardinal keeper Nicole Barnhart.
Engelhardt's goal made her UO's school record-tying 10th different goal scorer this season after the Ducks also had 10 in 1997, 1999 and 2001. The assist was awarded to a quick lead touch by redshirt freshman forward Andrea Valadez - her fourth assist of the season to tie for the team lead with Garbin. On defense, sophomore goalkeeper Domenique Laniez made five saves and played all 90:00.
The Ducks continued to flex their depth with their 12th different lineup in their 15th game of the season. The Ducks used their regular starting seven-woman corps of keeper Lainez, defenders Christine Mintz and Carlie Ashcraft, midfielders Lindsey Werdell and Cristan Higa, and forwards Garbin and French. Friday's four other starters included midfielders Engelhardt and Sabrina DeMonte and defenders Katie Abrahamson and Kelly Baird. Altogether, 18 Ducks saw action vs. Stanford - the sixth time this year that at least 18 or more UO players have played in a contest.
For Stanford, forward Brittany Oliveira led the Cardinal in shots (5), and tied for tops on shots on goal (2) with midfielder Allyson Marquand and Heidi Herrick.
In the team comparisons, Stanford held advantages in shots (18-7), shots on goal (8-3), corner kicks (2-1) and fouls (8-7) and offsides (2-1).
Looking ahead, the Ducks host California, Sunday at 1 pm at Pape' Field in Eugene. The Bears are the eighth opponent already this year that have made NCAA Tournament trips at least once the past two years, with three more to come.
