Duck Soccer Falls 4-0 to No. 4 Texas A&M
09/19/03 | Women's Soccer
DALLAS, Texas - The University of Oregon women's soccer team (5-1) suffered their first loss of the year, 4-0, Friday at the hands of No. 4 Texas A&M (5-1) in the opening game in the Mi Cocina Soccer Cup hosted by SMU.
At the end of the first half, the Ducks were down only 1-0 after Kristen Stutz connected on a low liner to the left side of the goal in the 19th minute from 6 yards center, and on an assist by Emma Smith. In the second half, the Aggie offense took better aim on their remaining 14 attempts, and added two goals by Smith, and another by Katherine Krambeer.
The Aggies' junior forward Smith scored her first goal in the 59th minute on a short run from 19 yards left past some UO defenders, followed by a low liner to the right. Smith converted another shot in the 68th minute from 14 yards, followed by Krambeer's final score just inside the penalty area, 10 yards out, in the 89th minute. For the game, Smith ended with 5 points (2 goals, 1 assist) and Strutz added four points (1 goal, 2 assists).
"It was very even the first 15 minutes, and Andrea (Valadez) and Mele (French) had good chances both very early and late," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "After we gave up that first goal, however, that rattled us a little - we never found a rhythm after, and they gained some momentum. Overall, we didn't have a great day, but hopefully we learn from this experience and are better for it down the road. A&M is very talented, and this is the first time some of our players have played talent at this level. We still haven't played our best soccer yet, and we're still fine-tuning our players and our rotation, and positioning on the field."
For the Ducks, sophomore forwards Mele French, Andrea Valadez and Nicole Garbin each logged one shot in the first half, and Garbin and sophomore midfielder Cristan Higa added single shots in the second half.
In goal for Oregon, sophomore goalkeeper Domenique Lainez tied the school record for saves in a game (15) - originally set by Sarah Peters vs. Washington in 2001. For A&M, sophomore starter Kati Jo Spisak claimed two saves in her 81 minutes of duty before being relieved by Nicki Bennigfield as the squad notched its third shutout this season.
"It was a good learning experience for Dom," Steffen said. "She did some good things, and there are some things we can work on. Her decision making got better as the match went on, and she saw new things today that will make her a better player."
In the tournament's Friday evening finale, host SMU will face Colorado College.
Looking ahead, the Ducks look ahead to their tourney finale on Sunday vs. SMU. The game is scheduled for a 10 am start (Pacific Time/ Noon Central Time), and the Mustangs were an NCAA Tournament Final 32 qualifier in 2002 and have received votes in several top-25 polls this season.
