No. 8 Washington Comes Back to Beat Duck Soccer, 4-1

EUGENE - The University of Oregon women's soccer team fell to No. 8-ranked Washington, 4-1, at home Sunday afternoon at Pape' Field.
The Ducks went up early on a goal by freshman forward Kami Kapaku in the 12th minute from the top of the 6-yard box center, off a Washington defender rebound.
However, the Huskies scored at 37:01 on an own goal that was deflected by Duck defender Katie Abrahamson's header off a free kick 36 yards left by Washington's Clare Ruckstad. UW's Kim Taylor added another goal at the end of the 38th minute on a 6-yard shot center on a cross pass from the left by Tina Frimpong. The play was started by Kelley Schweighart who made a 15-yard forward pass along the left central slot of the midfield.
In the second half, Washington added a goal by Frimpong in the 49th minute from 12 yards center off an indirect kick by Schweighart 25 yards wide left. The Huskies added a final score just before the 74th minute by Katy Dowling, on an unassisted arced shot from 25 yards center to the left top shelf.
For the Ducks, redshirt sophomore forward Andrea Valadez led in shots (3) and shots on goal (3). Kapaku ended with two shots and one shot on goal, and junior midfielder Carlie Ashcraft also had one shot and shot on goal. In goal, junior keeper Domenique Lainez claimed five saves.
"This has been a Jeckyll and Hyde weekend, and today was a Jeckyll and Hyde game," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "We did good things early on, but then dropped our level ... and that made it more frustrating. We weren't able to focus on the little things technically, and then we pressed when we tried to focus on too many difficult things at one time. We got behind them twice in the second half and had some good chances, but couldn't convert them and alter the texture of the game. That effected our confidence and our attitude, and in turn, the game."
Washington forward Tina Frimpong and Kelley Schweighart led the visitors in shots (3), and the duo combined with midfielder Dani Bridges for the team lead in shots on goal (2). Keeper Kelsey Rasmussen came up with three saves.
Team-wise, Washington held advantages in shots (15-6), the Ducks owned edges in saves (5-4) and fouls (20-12), and the two teams tied in corner kicks (4-4).
Only one yellow card was whistled Sunday, against Washington's Cassie Giles on a trip from behind near midfield on a run by Duck junior midfielder Cristan Higa.
Sunday's outcome lowered the Ducks' season mark to 3-10-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the Pac-10, while Washington improved to 12-3-1 overall, and 3-2-1 in the league. All-time, the Ducks are 0-8-1 against Washington. The Ducks lost to Huskies in Eugene in 1996 (2-0), 1998 (3-2), 2000 (6-1) and 2002 (2-1), and in Seattle, tied in 2001 (1-1, 2OT), and lost in 1997 (3-0), 1999 (1-0, 2OT) and 2003 (2-0).
Looking ahead, the Ducks travel next weekend to California to face the Bay Area schools. Oregon opens against Stanford, Fri., Oct. 29, at 5 p.m., then plays California, Sunday, Oct. 31, at noon.
