MIAMI, Fla. ? Seventh-ranked Georgia scored five runs in the seventh inning to defeat No. 13 Oregon, 11-6, in the opening day of play at the Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla. With the win, Georgia improves to 2-0 at the tournament and on the season while the Ducks fell to 0-1. Oregon will face host Florida International in the final game of the day at 7 p.m. EST.
The Bulldogs made up for a 12-inning 3-2 loss to the Ducks a year ago at the Seminole Classic in Tallahasse, Fla. The series is now 1-1 all-time between the teams.
The Ducks led 1-0 after the second inning and then trailed 5-1 before tying the game, 6-6, in the fifth inning when sophomore Beth Boskovich hit her first career grand slam. Georgia tied the game in the sixth inning and kept the Ducks at bay with a heavy dose of offense in the seventh inning.
The two teams combined for 17 hits, including three home runs and four doubles. Six different Oregon players had a hit in the game, led by junior Ashley Richards, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Freshmen Suzie Barnes and Ann Marie Topps got their first collegiate hits while Boskovich finished with a career-high four RBI.
"There were some really positive things that came out of this game," head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We were able to come back with a huge grand slam by Beth [Boskovich] and our freshman were able to play well. We just have to continue to get better and get stronger, but I know we'll be better in our next game."
Three different pitchers took the mound for the Ducks in the game, with junior college transfer Ani Nyhus picking up the loss. Georgia freshman Katie Griffith secured the win for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore shortstop Brenne Sabol doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Barnes and pull the Ducks within three runs, 5-2. Sabol then advanced to third on a single by Richards and the Ducks loaded the bases when Griffith intentionally walked senior Jenn Poore. Boskovich capitalized with her first career grand slam.
"I was just focusing on trying to make contact," Boskovich said. "I was lucky because the pitcher hung her change up right over the plate and I felt relaxed and confident while I was up there. I wasn't trying to do to much and I got a nice pitch."
Georgia shortsp Ashley Godfrey quickly knotted the score at six with her second home run of the season, hit over the right field fence. The Bulldogs then loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh inning after a double by Nicole Barber, a single by Katie Lewis and an intentional walk to Kim Wendland, who had three RBI in the game. Georgia went on to score five runs in the inning to take the lead 11-6 heading into the Ducks' final at-bat.
Poore initiated the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with her first home run of the season to put the Ducks ahead early, but Georgia responded in the top of the third inning, loading the bases after a single each by Julie Milner, Jade Jarvis and Nicole Barber. With two outs, Georgia junior Kim Wendland drove in Milner and Jarvis with a line drive to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Georgia extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Jarvis doubled to deep left field, scoring sophomore right fielder Courtney Knight.
Oregon loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning after a single by Richards and two walkds by Griffith, but the Ducks were unable to capitalize, leaving all three on base at the end of the inning.
In the fifth inning, Georgia added two more runs when Wendland drove in Nicole Barber with a single to left field. Wendland then stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball to center field and later scored on an errant throw that was ruled out of play.
