No. 13 Softball Bounces Back With 9-1 Win Over Florida International
02/06/04 | Softball
MIAMI, Fla. ? Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus and the No. 13 University of Oregon softball team responded to a difficult season-opening loss to No. 7 Georgia with a 9-1, six inning victory over host Florida International at the FIU tournament in Miami, Fla., Friday evening. Nyhus had eight strikeouts and freshman Ann Marie Topps hit her first career home run as the Ducks improved to 1-1 overall this season and the Golden Panthers' fell to 1-4.
"This team showed a lot of character in this game," head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "To come back and play this strong says a lot about this team and I'm pleased with how we played." The Ducks hit three home runs total on the first day of the tournament, including a grand slam by sophomore Beth Boskovich and had a total of 12 hits in their first two games. After struggling in her first appearance of the season against Georgia, Nyhus came back strong in her start against the Golden Panthers, allowing just four hits and one unearned run. Freshman Kayleen Hudson had a strong offensive performance in her first start, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Topps was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored after coming into left field for sophomore Dani Baird in the top of the fifth inning. "It felt really good to hit my first home run," Topps said. "It was nice to be able to contribute and get the win the way we did. We needed to come back strong in our second game and I was happy to be a part of that." Baird laid down a perfect bunt in the bottom of the third inning to score Hudson, who had doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Kristi Leiter's groundout. The Ducks extended their lead in the following inning after Jenn Poore walked and advanced to second on a base hit by Beth Boskovich. Junior second baseman Erin Goodell drove in Poore with a hit to left field and Boskovich later scored on a wild pitch to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead. Hudson then had her second hit of the game to drive in Goodell and Oregon led 4-0 after four innings. Florida International finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Jacque Vetters led off the inning with a double to deep right field and later scored on a wild pitch. Oregon took advantage of three Florida International errors in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four unearned runs and one earned run. Topps' two-run home run with two outs put Oregon ahead by eight runs and clinched the victory. The Ducks resume play at the tournament Saturday, facing Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m. EST.
