Nyhus Spectacular Again As Ducks Sweep Vikings

PORTLAND ? Jenn Poore's home run complemented another spectacular pitching performance by Ani Nyhus as the 15th-ranked Ducks shutout Portland State 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader after taking game one 5-2 to improve to 27-8 overall, 1-0 Pac-10. Portland State drops to 8-19 overall this season.
After giving up an infield slap hit to the Vikings' lead-off hitter in the first inning, Nyhus shut down Portland State's offense, striking out 12 and allowing no other hits. The junior has pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings and has allowed just one hit in her last 14 innings pitched. At one point in the game, Nyhus struck out six in a row and faced the minimum number of batters (21), recording 21 outs in a row thanks to a double play in the first inning. She has struck out 28 in her last two appearances after striking out 12 today. Portland State's Vanessa Holm (0-5) also pitched a solid game, giving up just one-hit through five innings. In the sixth, Poore hit a two-out home run, which proved to be the winning run for Oregon as Holm struck out the side in the seventh. In the first game, the Ducks scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning after shortstop Breanne Sabol reached on a Portland State error and later scored on an RBI single by Ashley Richards. The Ducks then got a hit each from Beth Boskovich and Kayleen Hudson to take a 3-2 lead. Richards added two more RBI in the seventh, driving in Julie Jaime and Suzie Barnes with a single through the left side to extend the Ducks' lead to 5-2. Richards was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in the game to lead Oregon's offense. A single each by Whitney Olsen and Maggie DeWall in the first inning put runners at first and second. Both players advanced on a passed ball and Kayla Lewis drove in Olsen with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Vikings took a 2-0 lead when Erin Stokey doubled through the left side to score DeWall and led until Oregon's three-run rally in the sixth.
