EUGENE - The Ducks finished their opening week of the regular season with a 1-1 overtime tie at home against San Diego State Sunday (8/29/04). The tie raised both teams' records to 0-1-1 on the season.
Junior midfielder Caitlin Gamble got the Ducks on the board at 35:40 on a quick 7-yard chip off an indirect free kick from 16 yards left by Carlie Ashcraft. The play was created after an Aztec defender fouled sophomore forward Mele French who had swung around her on a lateral end-line run towards the goal from 19 yards wide left. SDSU answered late at 86:15 when Gina Salinas rebounded her own deflected missed shot low into the right corner from 5 yards center. The play was created by a 15-yard aerial looper from the central midfield by Alexis Solovij.
The goal was Gamble's third of her career after she scored as a sophomore in wins over Boise State and Sacramento State, and as a freshman in a win over Wisconsin-Green Bay. Ashcraft's assist was the seventh of her career and moved her into a tie for fifth all-time for the Ducks with Chalise Baysa and Bowler. Other Ducks ranked ahead of her career-wise include redshirt junior teammate Nicole Garbin (first,13), and former Ducks Sierra Marsh and Erin Anderson (second-tie, 11) and Jori Gangnes (fourth, 8).
"We saw their defense have a little problem getting organized, so I immediately made eye contact with Carlie, and she stepped right up and hit it on a line my way. It was frustrating not to get the win, but collectively we played better today. We were pretty high-strung Friday after two weeks of two-day practices against each other. We found more rhythm today as a team, and our freshmen showed they're ready to contribute right away. I was glad to be able to contribute any way I could."
In the team comparison, SDSU held a 12-9 advantage in shots and 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Individually for the Aztecs, forward Gina Salinas and midfielder Jen Klunder tied for the team lead in shots (3) and shots on goal (2). Goalkeeper Sophia Perez ended with four saves in her 110 minutes of duty.
A trio of Ducks - sophomore forward Andrea Valadez, sophomore defender Dana Richardson and freshman midfielder Jen Cameron - tied for the team lead in shots (2), and Cameron led in shots on goal (2). Redshirt junior goalkeeper Domenique Lainez came up with six saves Her most spectacular was a leaping, one-handed upward deflection off the center crossbar off a hard, 28-yard arcing drive from the right side by a SDSU midfielder in the 72nd minute.
Eighteen Ducks saw action Sunday, including six of the Ducks' seven-member newcomer class. Nearly half of the Duck starters - five to be exact - were collegiate freshmen: Jen Cameron, Emily Danner, Kami Kapaku, Lisa Tedford and Dylann Tharp. Danner, Kapaku and Tedford also started Friday's season opener vs. UCSB where the Gauchos won 2-0. Both Cameron and Kapaku helped preserve the tie with impressive headers on defense out of the goalbox towards the end of regulation and in overtime, respectively, on corner kicks.
"We played better today, but the outcome is what matters, and we didn't put them away," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "We played better as a unit compared to Friday, and our freshmen especially played with more confidence and composure. It came down to us not converting some chances, while they took advantage of a breakdown late, and converted on a soft opportunity."
Looking ahead, the Ducks hit the road next weekend to play Weber State on Friday, Sept. 3 at 1 pm PST, and Utah on Sunday, Sept. 5 at noon PST, with both games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Utah was an NCAA first-round advancer last year, while both teams won their conferences (Big Sky/Mountain West) last year. The Ducks beat Weber State, 2-1, last year in Eugene, and tied Utah, 1-1, in their last meeting in 2002 in Eugene.
