Ducks Lose Heart-Breaker to #22 Washington State
10/25/08 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon women's soccer team held No. 22 Washington State to just four shots on Friday night at Pape' Field, but the Cougars made the most of them, scoring twice, including the game-winner in the second overtime period to win 2-1.
"We played so well tonight,” said Oregon head coach Tara Erickson. “We out-shot them, we out-played them and we out-hustled them. My heart breaks for this team tonight."
In the second overtime period, with the Ducks holding a 17-3 edge in shots, Washington State's Tiara Pittman took a few touches toward the net and around the Oregon defense before delivering a precise short crossing pass to the middle of the box where Carly Dobratz was waiting to one-touch the ball into the back of the net.
Oregon fell to 7-6-2 (0-3-1 Pac-10) with the painful defeat while Washington State improved to 8-4-4 (2-2-1) with the victory.
The Cougars jumped on the board first after a shot from Dobratz grazed slightly off an Oregon defender and the change in trajectory was just enough for the ball to sneak in between the outstretched arms of a diving Cody Miles and the far post.
Oregon did not give up after going down early, possessing the ball for the vast majority of the game and taking countless near-miss shots on goal.
The Ducks held an 8-2 advantage in shots after the first half and were out-shooting the Cougars 5-1 in the second frame before Oregon finally put a shot into the back of the net.
After a Washington State foul gave the Ducks a free kick from 25 yards out with only 2:47 left on the clock, Teresa Bowns played a perfect crossing pass in front of the net and Kirstie Kuhns used a header to redirect the ball into the back of the net near the far post. It was Kuhn's second score of the season.
Oregon stayed on the attack in the first overtime period, racking up three more shot attempts but could not break the tie.
Just two minutes into the second overtime Dobratz was able to seal the game with her second goal of the night and give Washington State the victory.
"I am so proud of this team,” Erickson said. “Especially with the number of injuries they are dealing with, I couldn't have asked for more. The amount of effort they gave was great, and it was crushing to lose like that in overtime."
Parlee made six saves in the net while Miles tallied one save for the Ducks. Oregon held a slim edge in corner kicks, with three compared to the Cougars' two.
Oregon will battle the other Pac-10 team from the Evergreen State on Sunday, with the Ducks and Huskies set to square off at 1 p.m. Also in action on Friday night, the Huskies defeated Oregon State in Corvallis, 2-1.
NOTES: For the first time this season, Oregon head coach Tara Erickson did not go to her bench as all 11 starters played the full 102 minutes ... The four shots taken by the Cougars was the lowest opponent output of the season since Utah State managed five shots in the second game of the season on Aug. 29.
