Oregon Falls 2-1 to Washington
10/26/08 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon women's soccer team rallied on Sunday
afternoon to tie Washington 1-1 after going down early, but the Huskies
scored the eventual game-winner just moments later to hand the Ducks a
2-1 defeat at Pape' Field.
Oregon fell to 7-7-2 (0-4-1 Pac-10) with its second straight loss while Washington's third straight win propelled it to 12-5-0 (3-3-0).
Washington scored its first goal of the game in the 10th minute of the contest when Kellye Joswick scored her fourth goal of the season on a header of a free kick in the corner of the field from Jenna Robison. A crowd of Huskies and Ducks went up for Robison's perfectly placed crossing pass but Joswick was able to get the highest and get enough of her head it to drive the ball past Oregon keeper Cody Miles from point blank range.
The Ducks looked a little lethargic in the games' opening minutes after playing Washington State to double-overtime on Friday night. But the Washington score certainly woke them up and the two teams battled back and forth. Oregon had a few good chances in the first half but was out-shot 7-5 by the Huskies in the opening frame.
In the second period the back-and-forth play continued with Oregon tying the game up in the 72nd minute. After multiple shot attempts and crossing passes were sent away from net by the Washington defense, one cleared ball landed perfectly at the foot of Jessica Goodell, who powered a shot high to the top of the net that snuck just underneath the cross bar for the fifth goal of her senior season.
With the crowd now boisterous and back into the game and the Ducks chomping at the bit for another goal and their first Pac-10 win of the season, a Washington forward was fouled just outside the Oregon box, setting up a free kick for the Huskies in the 80th minute. Robison lined up for the set piece once again, but this time didn't need one of her teammates to redirect the ball into the net as she bent the ball around the Oregon wall and inside the near post.
Oregon keeper Cody Miles played another strong game in the net, despite the two scores, attacking balls on numerous occasions before they could turn into shots. The freshman also made five nice saves to keep her team in the game.
Washington held a 16-7 advantage in shots at the final horn while both teams took four corner kicks. Oregon was whistled for eight fouls while Washington was called for six infractions but was issued the lone yellow card of the game in the 70th minute.
Oregon will hit the road for the last time this season, heading to the desert to play Arizona State at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31 and Arizona at 1 p.m. on Nov. 2.
NOTES: Oregon senior Allison Newton missed her third straight game with a knee injury after starting 72 straight games to begin her career ... Cody Miles made five saves against the Huskies after tallying a season-low one save versus Washington State ... Goodell's goal was her fifth of the season and seventh of her career.
