Oregon Nets First Draw of Season, 3-3, at Long Beach State
09/14/08 | Women's Soccer
LONG BEACH, Calif. ? The Oregon women's soccer team recorded its first draw of the season, 3-3, in double-overtime after a Long Beach State goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation forced the extra frames.
Teresa Bowns, Jen Stoltenberg and Jessica Goodell scored for the Ducks who played back-to-back double-overtime games this weekend after finishing their first five contests of the 2008 season in the standard 90 minutes.
“I thought we played very well in a tough environment,” said head coach Tara Erickson. “We were a little gassed at the end of the game, especially playing in overtime on Friday too, but we ran our butts off and scored three very good goals. Give them credit for fighting back at the end.”
With the draw, Oregon's record stands at 4-2-1 while Long Beach State, which received votes in the most recent top-25 NSCAA coaches poll, sticks at 4-1-2.
Oregon tallied 10 shots one game after recording the second highest number of shots in team history with 32 against UC Riverside. Long Beach State fired 20 shots, the first time the Ducks were outshot by their opponents since the season-opener at No. 6 Portland.
Oregon freshman keeper Cody Miles had a solid game against the talented 49ers, with a season-high nine saves on Sunday afternoon, eclipsing her previous season-best of five.
The first five goals of the game were scored in a 20 minute span before Long Beach State tied the game up in the final minutes of regulation.
Long Beach State took the early lead with a goal from senior midfielder Haley Bolt in the 31st minute. After a long crossing pass into the box from one of the 49ers, Bolt leaped into the air and put her head onto the ball, driving it into the back of the net.
Less than 10 minutes later, in the 40th minute of the contest Oregon tied the ballgame when Bowns added her fourth goal of the season and third of the weekend when she dribbled past a defender after taking a pass from Stoltenberg and rifled a powerful shot past the keeper from just outside the box.
“Teresa's goal was a real zinger,” Erickson said. “We didn't get that many good looks in the first 35 minutes or so of the game, but Teresa made a great move to get past the defender and get an open look.”
Long Beach State regained the lead in the 42nd minute off of a penalty kick goal, the second PK goal against the Ducks this season in as many tries.
But Oregon would not let the horn blast at halftime with the 49ers holding a lead, as Stoltenberg tied the game in the 44th minute off of a free kick from just outside the penalty area. The sophomore took a direct shot on the net, blasting the ball hard off her foot to the far top corner of the net, impossible for the Long Beach State keeper to even attempt a save. The score was Stoltenberg's third goal of the season.
The Ducks used the momentum from their late first half goal to jump out to a 3-2 lead just minutes into the second frame.
Allison Newton made a great run down the left side of the field and pushed the ball forward before she sent a perfect crossing pass into the box where Goodell was able to one-touch the ball past the 49er keeper from three yards away from the net. It was also Goodell's third goal of the season.
The game went back and forth for the remainder of the second half before Long Beach State put on a late charge to tie the game. The 49ers repeatedly sent the ball over the top, forcing the Oregon defense to clear the ball away time and time again. On one such clear, the ball went out of bounds along the sideline deep in Duck territory. Long Beach State sent a long throw-in into the Oregon box and as the ball was sent away, Kim Silos corralled the cleared ball and took a tough shot from 30 yards out that snuck just under the crossbar for the game-tying goal.
The action was fierce in the first overtime period, as Miles and LBSU keeper Liz Ramos combined to make five saves in the first ten minutes of extra time. But the score remained deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the second overtime frame and neither team could create a good scoring opportunity in the final ten minutes as Long Beach State recorded the only shot attempt in the final ten minutes.
“It's always disappointing to lose a game but we didn't give away the late goal,” Erickson said. “They earned the draw and so did we.”
NOTES: Allison Newton moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time career assists list with the 12 ... Teresa Bowns also secured sole possession of sixth place on the all-time career points list with 28 (9 G, 10 A) in her career ... The 10 shots taken on Sunday afternoon was the second-lowest output of the season (nine at Portland).
