CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Sophomore midfielder Scout Libke's game-winning goal in the 95th minute lifted the University of Oregon soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over San Diego State Friday night in the opening match of the 2010 Oregon State Nike Invitational.
It was a monumental win for UO head coach Tara Erickson who broke the school record for career coaching victories (50).
Erickson has a six-year
coaching mark of 50-45-12 in her time with UO, passing by Bill Steffen
who posted 49 victories in nine years as mentor for the Ducks.
The Ducks improved to 3-3-2 overall with the win, while the Aztecs dropped to 2-5-2 on the year.
“A great win for our team. We really played the same way we've been playing throughout all of our matches. And it was just great to come out on a winning end tonight,” Erickson said.
Libke's goal, her first of the season and fourth of career, was assisted by senior midfielder Kirstie Kuhns and sophomore forward Tahne Apo. The shot was set up when Kuhns played a long ball to Apo, who played it to Libke, who then beat SDSU goalkeeper Aubree Southwick to the upper-right corner.
Senior forward Jen Stoltenberg scored UO's first goal of the match in the 36th minute. That unassisted score equalized the contest for the Ducks, who fell down 1-0 in the 16th minute when SDSU forward Sarah Halverson scored an unassisted goal to give the Aztecs the early lead.
“For us to go down 1-0 against them and comeback for a 2-1 win showed great character from our team,” Erickson added.
Apo, Libke and Stoltenberg each tallied a team-best four shots in the match. Three of Libke's shots were on goal, two of Apo's were on target and Stoltenberg scored on her only shot on frame.
“Stolt's goal was a really good individual effort. She defensively picked the ball off and ran at the defense and scored on them,” Erickson said.
The Ducks out-shot their opponent once again (17-10), marking the sixth straight match they held an advantage in that category. UO also held an edge in corner kicks (3-2) and goalkeeper saves (7-6). Oregon, who was offside on three occasions, was called for nine fouls to SDSU's four.
All seven saves for UO were made by junior goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee who played the duration of the match.
The win was Oregon's first this season when going into halftime with a tie score. UO was previously 0-3-1 with a tie score at the break.
Oregon (3-3-2) will play again at Paul Lorenz Field Sunday at 11 a.m. (PT) with a neutral-site match against Butler.
