RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Oregon men's tennis team rebounded from Thursday's defeat with a dominant, 7-0, win over UC Riverside on Friday afternoon.
The Ducks (8-2) swept all nine matches on the day, the third time that has happened in the past five matches.
“It was nice to get back on the horse after a rough day yesterday,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “I think they guys did a reasonably good job today. The energy and intensity in the doubles was much better. You could tell we had a match under our belt this week.”
UO featured a new doubles lineup and it responded with a clean sweep of the first point of the dual. Jose Izquierdo and Douglas Mayeda debuted at the No. 1 spot, only the second pairing to play at the top spot this season, and rattled off an 8-6 win over Michael Conroy and Quoc Doan.
The other doubles highlights were Alex Rovello and Robin Cambier bouncing back at the No.2 spot by defeating Kevin Griffin and Felix Macherez, 8-3, and No. 3 pairing Aaron Clissold and Duncan MacDonald-Korth posting an 8-5 victory over Austin Andres and Raineir Matias.
Oregon made it through singles play with little trouble, posting straight-set wins in five of the six matches. No. 120 Alex Rovello recovered from Thursday's setback to defeat Quoc Doan 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. The other straight set wins were posted by Cambier (6-2, 6-4 over Felix Macherez) at No. 2, Baptiste Faynot (7-5, 6-3 over Austin Andres) at No. 3, MacDonald-Korth (6-3, 6-2 over Kevin Griffin) at No. 5 and Clissold (6-3, 6-0 over Sean Peterson) at No. 6.
At No. 4 singles, Jose Izquierdo held off a comeback attempt by Ryan Stanbury with a three-set victory (6-2, 1-6, 6-2) to cap the scoring.
The Ducks return to the court on Feb. 25, when they face Washington in Seattle.
