Ducks Fall to No. 19 Huskies, 6-1
02/26/11 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Robin Cambier picked up his fourth-straight win and sixth in his last seven matches, but that was the lone match win for the Oregon men's tennis team in a 6-1 dual loss to No. 19 Washington on Friday.
Oregon falls to 8-3 with the loss with all three setbacks coming at the hands of ranked opponents.
Cambier improved to 16-5 overall this season with his win at No. 3 singles over Washington's No. 125 Martin Kildahl (6-4, 7-5). The Brussels, Belgium freshman is now 8-3 in dual play.
“We started were very flat at No. 2 and 3 doubles,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “I thought we turned it around and played well in singles at points. I was very proud of Robin defeating a ranked player on the road in front of a big crowd. There were a lot of close moments in the singles and I think if we turn it up a notch tomorrow, we have a chance at a good result.”
Jose Izquierdo also had a tightly played match at No. 4 singles. The junior won his first set against Daniel Schmidt, but dropped the next two to suffer only his fifth loss of the year (3-6, 6-2, 6-3).
Oregon struggled at the other four singles spots as they all dropped their matches in straight sets and won only 10 games.
In doubles play, the Ducks got a spirited effort out of their top pairing of Cambier and Alex Rovello, who battled back and forth against the 24th-ranked duo Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, but fell by a count of 8-5. The Huskies swept the doubles point with their No. 2 and 3 pairings only losing three combined games.
Oregon returns to the court on Saturday when it faces No. 72 San Francisco.
