Ducks Cruise to Fourth Consecutive Shutout
09/02/11 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore.- University of Oregon women's soccer (4-0) cruised to its fourth consecutive shutout by taking care of University of New Hampshire (0-2), 3-0, on the opening day of the UO Nike Tournament in Eugene at Pape' Field.
With the consecutive shutout school record set, the Ducks are now off to their best start since going 5-0 to start the 2003 campaign.
Unlike their last outing, UO needed to take five shots before Mo Fitzgerald caught Julie Armstrong running across the top of the box for her third goal of the season. Armstrong set up 23 yards out and sent the shot into the upper right corner of the goal to give Oregon a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first stanza.
The Ducks took that lead into the half.
The fouls were even at five heading into the second half of action, but the match turned physical.
Two minutes into play, New Hampshire's Alli Rozelle was issued a yellow card
after she checked Armstrong hard sending Armstrong to the bench with what
appeared to be a leg injury. She did not return to the field.
Kelsey Foo sent a shot toward the net after the Ducks gained possession again on the card, but her shot went high. Back-to-back corner kicks by Scout Libke resulted in nothing for the Green and Yellow scoring corps although Ryann Davie had a nice look that was saved by UNH goalkeeper Erica Correa.
Oregon picked up a foul after the play, but once again the Wildcats would pick up a yellow card except this time by Kelly Spencer.
Libke and Maddy Mercier got positive looks at adding to the Duck total, but Correa got her hands on both shots for saves.
Both teams exchanged fouls as the physical play continued, but the UNH coaching staff was not pleased with the officiating of the match and let the referees know about it resulting in the Wildcats' third yellow card of the match.
With the ball back in UO's possession Shanelle Simien was taken out in the box by a Wildcat defender and the Ducks were awarded their first penalty kick of the season.
Libke took the extra kick for the Ducks and it was good, giving Oregon a 2-0 lead with 30 minutes left to play.
Looking to not let up, Smith entered the match and took her only shot of the match at 68:28, but it was blocked. Mercier came in off the deflection and knocked in her second goal of the season to put away the game for UO at 3-0.
Once again Lindsay Parlee and Abby Steele split time in goal, but Parlee was credited with the victory to move to 4-0 on the season in her two-save appearance. Correa moved to 0-2, but notched a game-high five saves.
The Ducks return to action on Sunday to close out the tournament against #16 Santa Clara at 1p.m. at Pape' Field. New Hampshire and #21 Oregon State face off at 10 a.m. in the first match on Sunday.
