Ducks Pink Game Benefits Kay Yow Fund

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's soccer team donned pink jerseys on Oct. 2 in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The jerseys were auctioned off to raise money for the Kay Yow Fund.
In the past three seasons, the Ducks have raised $5,529 for the Play4Kay Fund.
"The Pink Game is always something special to me," said head coach Kat Mertz. "Breast cancer is a disease that can affect everyone in some way – a close relative or a friend, a friend of a friend and or a neighbor or a coworker. We take a lot of pride in supporting the cause and doing our part in raising awareness and raising funds to help find a cure. We appreciate the support from our families, friends and the local Eugene and Springfield community."
Sandra Kay Yow was a former NC State head women's basketball coach, past president and member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and after battling her third bout of the disease, she passed away on January 24, 2009.
In her 38 years as a collegiate head coach, Yow was one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to reach 700 career wins. She led her squads to 20 of the 27 NCAA Tournaments, made 11 trips to the Sweet 16 and made a trip to the Elite Eight and Final Four in 1998. Yow, who was named national Coach of the Year eight times, also was chosen as a coach to lead USA Basketball to a gold medal. In the 08-09 season, Yow became only one of three women's basketball coaches in NCAA Division I history to coach 1,000 games at one institution.
