Lone Goal Tops Ducks in Salt Lake
10/09/16 | Women's Soccer
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Oregon's arduous slate to open the 2016 Pac-12 women's soccer schedule continued Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 loss to Utah at Ute Field.
The Ducks dropped to 6-7-1 on the season and 0-5-0 in Pac-12 play. Utah improved to 9-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in league play. The Utes were the fifth straight team undefeated in Pac-12 play that the Ducks have faced to open the league slate.
How it Happened: The Utes' Hailey Skolmoski scored the game's lone goal in the 63rd minute. Katie Rogers slipped a cross through the box that Oregon goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir deflected to Skolmoski, who tapped the ball in for the score from point-blank range. Hinriksdottir's record fell to 3-4-0.
The Ducks created many scoring opportunities at Utah's end of the field, outshooting the Utes 12-8 and dominating on corner kicks 9-3, but could not put the ball in the net.
Senior defender Ashlee Schulz led Oregon with three shots, while sophomores Marissa Everett and Kyra Fawcett each added two.
What it Means: It's hard to imagine a more difficult way that the Ducks could have started league play. The first five Pac-12 teams that Oregon has faced – Stanford, USC, UCLA, Colorado and Utah – currently have a combined record of 20-3-3.
The silver lining in that is that even though the Ducks have dropped five matches in a row, their RPI remained high. Oregon was 32nd heading into the weekend.
Quotes: Head coach Kat Mertz –
"It was a good battle today by both teams. Unfortunately, we gave up a goal that could have been prevented. We're looking forward to coming back home to work on some small defensive details that will help keep the ball out of the net."
Looking Ahead: The schedule continues to be a tough one for Oregon, which returns home on Saturday to host No. 18 California Saturday at 6 p.m. The Golden Bears come into the match in second place in the Pac-12 at 4-0-1 (11-2-1 overall).
