Ducks Defeat Bulldogs for First Victory of the Season
08/21/16 | Women's Soccer
HONOLULU – The Oregon women's soccer team closed out the trip to Hawaii with a 2-1 win over Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Ducks move to 1-0-1 on the 2016 season.
"It's great to walk away from the weekend undefeated," said head coach Kat Mertz. "We started strong once again with a nice goal by Jayne Lydiatt assisted by Marissa Everett and Ashlee Schulz. We moved the ball well and kept the tempo high. Although I'm disappointed we gave up a goal, we finished the game strong. We were able to move players around and got some quality minutes from players off the bench. We're looking forward to traveling back home and start our quest of defending Papé Field."
For their performance over the tournament, Everett, sophomore Kyra Fawcett, redshirt junior Caitlyn Wong and freshman Katelyn Carter were named to the Outrigger Soccer Classic Series All-Tournament team.
How it Happened: In the third minute of the game, freshman Lydiatt scored the first goal of her collegiate season off an assist from Everett and Schulz. In the 26th minute, Fawcett scored her second goal of the weekend to put the Ducks up 2-0 before half. Gonzaga would respond in the 58th minute and scored off a Lauren Luke header goal assisted by Sarah Carter. The Bulldogs weren't able to capitalize off their attempts throughout the remainder of the game however, giving the Ducks the win.
On the night, the Ducks tallied twelve shots to Gonzaga's 10 and Oregon was able to earn four corner kicks opportunities.
Senior Ashlee Schulz, redshirt senior Maryn Beutler and Lydiatt contributed three shots for the Ducks. Sophomore Bayley Bruner, Wong, junior Abby Morrow, senior Marlo Sweatman, Everett and Fawcett all contributed one.
In goal, Carter made one save for Oregon and her record moves to 1-0-1.
What it Means: To close out the weekend, Oregon returns back home with a 1-0-1 record. The 2016 season is loaded and just beginning, but starting things off with a tie and a win gives the Ducks a positive spin on the season.
Looking Ahead: The Ducks will open the regular-season schedule at home as the team hosts Nebraska this Friday, Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. and Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 28 at 5:00 p.m. Friday night's game will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Network and there will be a live stream for Sunday's match.
