Ducks Rally to Keep Undefeated Streak Alive
09/02/16 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon soccer team rallied from a one goal deficit to defeat the Boise State Broncos 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Papé Field.
The Ducks are now 4-0-1 on the season, matching 2011's record for the best program start in five years.
The win also marks the first come from behind victory for the Ducks this season.
How it Happened: Through a scoreless 45 minutes, the Broncos emerged in the second half to score in the 65th minute. Eva Herrera put BSU on the board with her second goal of the season off an assist from Kristina Serres.
Herrera's goal would be the only for the Boise State, as senior Marlo Sweatman tied things up in the 73rd minute off assists from freshman Jessica Yu and Bayley Bruner. The assist marks Yu's first of her collegiate career and Bruner's third of the season.
Junior Abby Morrow scored her second game-winning goal of the season to lift the Ducks 2-1 in the 79th minute.
Possession bounced between UO and BSU, but on the night, the Ducks would tally 17 shots (nine on goal) to the Bronco's eight (three on goal). The Ducks earned eight corner kick opportunities, while Boise State had four.
Sophomore Marissa Everett added the most shots for the Ducks with five, while redshirt junior Caitlyn Wong and Morrow had three and Sweatman contributed two. Senior Ashlee Schulz, sophomore Taylor Kuroda, freshman Artrea Williams and Bruner all added one.
Freshman Katelyn Carter record in goal moves to 3-0-1. Junior Halla Hinriksdottir grabbed two key saves for the Ducks. Her record stands 1-0-0 in the net.
What it Means: The Ducks undefeated streak continues and marks the best program start in five years. The University of Oregon and Boise State's all-time series record moves to 5-0-0, UO.
Quotes: Head coach Kat Mertz -
On the comeback win…
"Tonight's win was good for soccer entertainment, not good for coaching, but it was nice for us to fight back. That was our message after the first half and Marlo's goal definitely showed fight and exactly what we needed."
On the slow start…
"When things don't get going after the first five minutes, it's not the end of the world. Good teams find a way to win. I was proud of our fight and resiliency, battling back from being one goal down."
Abby Morrow, Jr., Midfielder
On scoring the game-winning goal…
"It felt really good. It's good to have the feeling of hard work paying off. We talked at halftime about heart and just putting everything out there, so I just stuck my leg out and put everything I had into that shot. Luckily, it went between the keeper's arms and found the back of the net."
Looking Ahead: The Ducks will host the Mean Green out of North Texas this Sunday at Papé Field. Action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. Next week, the Ducks will take flight for the second road trip of the season next week, as they face UC Irvine on Sept. 9 and Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 11 in Fullerton, Calif.
