Oregon improved to 21-0 with a pair of wins on Friday to open up the Oregon Invitational.
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 4 Oregon softball team grabbed back-to-back wins on Friday in their home opener at the Oregon Invitational, run-ruling Hofstra 16-0 and topping Idaho State 9-3.
GAME 1: Steady pitching and power-hitting led the Ducks past Hofstra in a five-inning run-rule. Oregon brought home six in the first inning, including a two-run single by Jenna Lilley and a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Hofstra loaded the bases in the second with a two-out single, but Megan Kleist picked up a strikeout for the third out. Nikki Udria blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second before Kleist, in her first career at-bat at home, belted a two-run homer as well.
Kleist kept Hofstra's bats quiet and tallied six strikeouts in the five innings. Pitcher Miranda Elish, pinch-hitting in the fourth, had a home run of her own to seal a 16-0 win for Oregon.
Lilley was happy to be back at The Jane and went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Freshman Mia Camuso and Haley Cruse each drew two walks.
GAME 2: Maggie Balint came to the circle for the Ducks to kick off the second game of the day against Idaho State. She pitched four innings and struck out five while allowing only one run on three hits. Miranda Elish took over and struck out seven in her three innings. Oregon held off Idaho State until the third inning, when they scored a single run. However, the Ducks answered with a big seven run third.
Nikki Udria picked up a RBI on a groundout to start the scoring in the third before Sammie Puentes drew a bases-loaded walk. Lauren Lindvall followed with a RBI single to center then Shannon Rhodes cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right center. Alexis Mack tallied the final RBI of the third on a grounder.
Idaho State scored two more in the fifth to prevent a run-rule win for the Ducks, but Elish did not allow another run over the final two frames.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mike White, on improving to 21-0…
"We're being pretty consistent. I think the energy level was pretty high in the first game. Overall I think we are doing a great job."
On facing Pacific tomorrow afternoon…
"I think we need to put the ball in play, get hits, and make them try to catch us. That's what we've been doing all year – getting a hit and make people try to catch us. I like our pitching staff, we don't give up too many runs."
Jenna Lilley, on coming home after four weeks on the road…
"It is so nice to be home, to not have to pack a suitcase, being able to sleep in your own bed, trying to catch up on schoolwork, it feels so great. Most importantly and above all, playing in front of our home crowd – we haven't seen crowds like this at all, and our fans are the best. That's definitely really special."
UP NEXT: Oregon plays another doubleheader tomorrow as part of the Oregon Invitational.
