Ducks Fall 1-0 at UC Irvine
09/10/17 | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. —UC Irvine scored the only goal of the match in the 37th minute and held on for a 1-0 win over Oregon Sunday at Anteater Stadium.
Oregon (4-2) lost for the first time since the season opener as the Anteaters (3-1-3) snapped the Ducks' four-match winning streak.
How It Happened: UC Irvine took the lead on a header by Grayson Galbraith in the 37th minute. That was part of a first half that was controlled by the Anteaters. UC Irvine outshot the Ducks 10-3 in the opening period.
The Ducks were stronger in the second half, outshooting the Anteaters 6-4 and generating their best scoring chances.
Chardonnay Curran fired off a shot in the 53rd minute that sent UC Irvine goalkeeper Maddie Newson leaping to make the save and keeping Oregon off the board.
Newson also made a save on Emma Eddy's shot in the 90th minute.
Who Stood Out: Goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir made five saves, allowing just the one goal in 90 minutes. Abby Morrow came off the bench to lead Oregon with three shots.
What It Means: Though the team was shutout for the first time in 2017, Oregon played a close road game against a UC Irvine team that tied Arizona (0-0) and defeated Portland (3-0) earlier this season, and looks to be among the top in the Big West.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"Irvine is a very good team and we knew this was going to be a tough test. Unfortunately we just couldn't find a way to score today. So we can work on that and keep improving because we need to be ready for another tough test Friday against Montana."
Notable: UC Irvine snapped an Oregon win streak for the second straight year. This year it was a four-game streak, last season it was a five-game streak.
Up Next: Oregon returns to Pape' Field to host Montana Friday at 7 p.m. and Idaho State Sunday at 5 p.m. Both matches can be seen on Pac-12 Live Stream.
