Lydiatt, Defense Lead Ducks to Victory
09/03/17 | Women's Soccer
BOISE, Idaho — Jayne Lydiatt had a goal and an assist and Oregon's defense made some impressive stops in the second half as the Duck women's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 2-1 Sunday at the Boas Soccer Complex.
How It Happened: The Ducks (3-1) got on the board in the ninth minute on a free kick from just outside the Cal Poly box. Marissa Everett sent a one-hopper across the goal mouth to Lydiatt, who punched the ball in from five yards out.
Kyra Fawcett scored her second goal of the weekend in the 34th minute to make it 2-0 Oregon. Lydiatt sent a perfect ball up the middle just over the Cal Poly back line to Fawcett, who beat Mustang goalkeeper Sophia Brown one-on-one from eight yards out. It turned out to be Fawcett's second game-winning goal of the weekend.
Cal Poly (2-3-1) cut the Oregon lead to 2-1 in the 44th minute, taking advantage when the Ducks couldn't clear a corner kick. On the play, the ball bounced off a couple of Oregon players and ricocheted to Jessica Johnson, who scored from the top of the box.
Neither team found the net in the second half, but the Ducks made a couple of stops to preserve the win, with none bigger than Brianne Parsons' game-saving clearance off the goal line in the 71st minute.
Oregon outshot the Mustangs 19-16.
Who Stood Out: Goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir made six saves, one off her career high, in getting the win on Sunday, including an impressive diving stop of a Cal Poly free kick from just outside the box in the 17th minute.
Everett and Fawcett led the Ducks with five shots each, with defender Michelle Rockey coming up off the back line to attempt four shots.
What It Means: Oregon went 2-0 at the Boise State Tournament, with Fawcett scoring the game-winning goal in both matches. The Ducks also have a three-match winning streak for the first time since winning four straight early in the 2016 season.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"The game was a lot of end-to-end action with a lot of quality chances on goal. Cal Poly is a very good team and tough to play against."
"Halla (Hinriksdottir) was able to make some big saves to preserve the win."
"I was extremely proud of the effort today. Overall, really happy to get two wins on the road."
Notable: Everett, who led Oregon with five assists in 2016, showed why she is one of the best play-makers in the Pac-12 by threading a pass through traffic to Lydiatt for the Ducks' first goal. … The Ducks had gone 230 minutes without allowing a goal until Cal Poly's score in the first half. … Oregon used its bench extensively over the weekend, with 21 players seeing action on Sunday after 20 played Friday against Oklahoma. … Emma Eddy, a sophomore from Eugene, made her first start of the season.
Up Next: Oregon returns home to host Idaho Friday at 7 p.m. at Pape' Field (Pac-12 Live Stream).
